  • Thinking of switching browsers?

I found this to be quite interesting reading.

Mmm, interesting, they all seem to have different advantages/disadvantages & the testers came out with Firefox as the winner 'just', that's the one I'm thinking of trying so I might give it a go now.

Maybe worth mentioning that the article is nearly 18 months old now... things have moved on a fair bit since then.

I've had a quick speed-read of the article and it didn't change my view that Firefox is the best for me. The ability to make the browser do exactly what I want it to do via add-ons without having to have loads of useless features I'll never want is really a huge selling point for me.

      Cheers for the link, Mally.

Chrome was the winner wasn't it?
I've got Chrome, and it was only recently that I realised: "One thing Chrome has done is simplified the traditional combination of address bar and search bar. Instead, you use the same box to type URLs and search criteria"

Overall they said Firefox was the winner Two Sheds ('just' even though they gave Chrome as the winner of 2 sections ) at the end of the article but as Organic's pointed out the report is quite old now so things may have changed.

TS - I do exactly the same thing in FireFox and have done for some time. If anything that's typed isn't a proper address it turns into a search term.

I dunno if that came as part of an addon or if it's standard with FireFox but it certainly works.

Is it just me that thinks there's something fundamentally wrong with "18 months" being considered "old"?
I know computers and computer software move at a fairly blistering pace, and as a computer user of 20+ years it's not news to me - but I still find it wierd that I almost dismiss out of hand anything much over 6 months old as "probably not accurate any more".

I'm glad I don't have that view of non-computery stuff... I'm really traditional and slow moving on that front!

I use a mixture of Chrome and IE8.

Firefox crashes with some Java programs.
Chrome does not work with a few key programs.. So I run IE8 and Chrome together at times..

                Edit
I sympathise with organic. I have a 40 year old lawnmower but my PC is upgraded every year...

I have used Chrome and it was great until they put that facebook type thing on and everything started going wrong then. I used Mozilla Firefox previously and went back to that. Its fine for me.

                        Organic.

                        Every year? Yes.

I build my own from second hand parts.. so when I upgrade I sell the old ones.

I am always about 2 years behind the latest technology as a result as anything new is FAR too expensive.

The net costs of each upgrade after selling the bits is under £50.

My disks are new but surplus stock sold at silly prices (£15) on ebay, My CPU cost £60 - I sold the prior one for £30.. and I run 3 monitors (2 19" secondhand and one 19 widescreen - all HP and all around £90 or less)...

I run realtime sharetrading systems so reliability is vital. I keep a backup rather slow PC in case the current one falls apart and use a UPS as we have occasional power outages..

I always use Firefox as it's safer than IE, plus it is updated on a regular basis.

I don't know if it's a coincidence but since changing from chrome to firefox, my PC takes forever to boot up.
