  • Struggling with the Turkey?

    Twelve days of Christmas

    On the first day of Christmas my true love said to me;
    I’m glad we bought fresh turkey and a proper Christmas tree.

    On the second day of Christmas much laughter could be heard;
    As we tucked into our turkey, a most delicious bird.

    On the third day we entertained people from next door;
    The turkey tasted just as good as it had the day before.

    Day four relations came to stay, poor gran is looking old;
    We finished up the Christmas pud and had the turkey cold.

    On the fifth day of Christmas outside the snowflakes flurried;
    But we were nice and warm inside being full of turkey curry.

    On the sixth day I must admit the Christmas spirit died;
    The children fought and bickered, we ate turkey rissoles fried.

    On the seventh day of Christmas my true love he did wince;
    As we sat down at the table and was offered turkey mince.

    Day eight nerves were getting frayed; the dog had run for shelter;
    I served up turkey pancakes and a glass of alka seltzer.

    On the ninth day our cat left home and dad was really Blotto;
    He said he had to have a drink to face the turkey risotto.

    By the tenth day the booze had gone, except the home made brew;
    And as if that wasn’t bad enough we suffered turkey stew.

    On the eleventh day of Christmas the Tree had started moulting;
    The mince pies were rock hard and the turkey quite revolting.

    On the twelfth day my true love had a smile upon his lips;
    Guests had gone The turkey too and WE DINED ON FISH AND CHIPS !!!!!!!!

      Hi All!!
      There is something magic about turkeys. Although they have been prepared, stuffed, cooked etc... it seems that the more you eat or try to give it away pretending that is lovely hot or cold, fantastic next day....it has a capability in regenarating itself so it will be there for ever!!.. This is only the time of the year in which foxes stay clear from our garden. But this year I really over did!!....I had already bought a turkey and all the trims just in case my local supermaket did run out ( Full price ) but Christmas eve I went back for reduced items....among the items I bought... another turkey at half price.....another already stuffed turkey crown at 2/3 off....another....
      Regards
      Don Vincenzo

        We had an organic, free range, corn-fed CHICKEN for our Christmas dinner, and it's all gone already!

          After Christmas dinner 2 days in a row (Christmas day with my dad, Boxing day with Madmax's parents) we hadn't finished one half of the turkey. I am busy now making 'Christmas casserole' (chuck all the leftover veg, chopped up turkey, sausage and bacon rolls, stuffing and gravy into a casserole dish and slow cook for a couple hours) and chopping turkey to make curry and decimating the carcass for stock and soup to freeze down. Saved a couple of slices to have with chips or in butties but it will be gone by tonight and frozen in different guises for enjoyment through January.

            Those familar with Terry Pratchett's discworld books will no doubt have heard of Nanny Ogg's famous Left-over Sandwiches Soup. I don't go quite that far but I make a mean soup with just about anything (except sandwiches!). The real secret is not getting a MASSIVE turkey!

              We LOVE turkey and still have about half of ours left which is great, having it cold tonight with bubble and squeak. Gave myself lunch off today but OH had a butty and will be having one myself tomorow. Will finish stripping it tomorrow so that I can make turkey soup with the bones and freeze a load of it for the next month or so. It cost enough seeing as we always buy a free range, local bird that has been looked after properly rather than the horrible mass produced ones you find in the supermarket, but the number of meals that we'll have had off it will make it pretty cheap in the long run. Still have pies, stir fries, curries etc to go - yipeeeeee

              Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

              Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

                ... oooo don't forget the turkey burgers! We bought a specially large turkey this year as I wanted some left to make them, but then it looks like my big sis and Dad are polishing the leftovers off before there will be any left!

                  We had a 3 Bird Roast from a local butcher (pheasant and chicken inside a goose): the best Xmas dinner ever, apparently. £60, but £48 of that was the goose.
                  the veggie freak (me) just had roast potatoes. they were lovely

                      Know exactly what you mean about the turkey Jennie. That's why we never have one. But thanks for the ditty. Enjoyed it.

                          Hope you feel better soon Two Sheds.

                          As for the turkey, OH gets them from work at Xmas, all staff get one each, but this year he was offered a couple that others didn't want so we got 3.
                          One down, was roasted, turned into a turkey casserole type thing with wine and a drop of cream, the rest was made into soup today.
                          Giving some of the soup to my mum, cos she's off to hospital for an op next week on her knee and she won't be able to stand up much after, so we are helping her fill her freezer with stuff she can microwave.

                            Flum, I love Pratchett, but never heard of that particular recipe. Must get hold of Nanny Ogg's cookbook!

                              I have the cook book Kirsty, but it wasn't from that - it was mentioned in Wintersmith which I re-read a couple of days ago. I'm having a mega read and knit over the holiday period. My dad made me a book holder that I can balance on my knee and it holds the pages down. Then as long as there's no fancy pattern I can knit and read at one go. Re-reading The Fifth Elephant now!
