  • Show prize money

Sarz mentioned the other day that some folks make loadsa dosh from prize money in shows.

Prizemoney at Culter and District Horticultural Society show in 2012.

    vegetables, all classes, 1st. 60p, 2nd. 40p, 3rd 20p.

To be fair, it's a really wee show and the cost of putting it on means the prize money can't be increased because it already runs at a loss. I show there because I think it's important to keep community things going. Even if I won every vegetable class, the cost of getting my entries there and back would exceed the prize money.

It's not about the money, money money <sings>

I think before our village show closed prizes were about £5 for 1st, £3 for 2nd and £2 for 3rd. Something like that because I had 2 1sts and a 2nd and got about £12.

Bigger shows like Southport have sponsored prizes so tend to be bigger

We don't have any kind of allotment related veg show where I am, I think the Allotment Association does a pumpkin competition but no idea if there is a prize!

Last year three of us arranged a 'Pimm's Party' on the allotment and it went really well so we're planning another one this year. Might be a bit too early in the year for a veg show but I'm thinking of borrowing a bingo set from someone and offering some packs of seeds as prizes... a prize for one row (a line) and another for a full bed (full house)!

Here's the schedule for Southport: http://www.southportflowershow.co.uk...le%20Final.pdf

£15.00 1st prize for the ordinary classes, £35 to £75 for collections/championship! Not something I'd want to get into though, our local one was quite stressful enough
