  • Ryton?

We went to Ryton at the weekend.....
The entrance area was fantastic....lots of interactive stuff for kids and us (sadly not all working, but still a very good display) but once in the grounds it was not so great at all. Most of it looked dry and empty! not really sure how to describe it. I thought it would be like the Wisley veg plot only much bigger with loads of different ideas and lots of healthy growing vegetables and fruit. It was really very poor.
My thoughts a few days later....
I can find more things actually growing on my little veg patch! Think I saw about 10 potato, plants 6 marrows (or sim) no leeks or spring onions, no carrots. tiny patch of parsnip...a few lettuce (most often seen plant of the day) It was not at all what I was expecting, especially after the fab shop and seed stands.
Whats happening here? or is it just me??
    Any one else been?

I think like most people, they have delayed putting tender veg out until after the cooler weather is over.

I go most days but have only been out in the gardens a couple of times; I am planning a walk round later this week but the last time I went it was more spring flowers that were out.

I'll feed back to the gardeners your thoughts; I know they have been busy growing stuff; it's just the transplanting that they have held back on. I'm sure now it's June they will be planting out like crazy. And I know they have rabbit problems so I'm wondering if they have had veggies eaten as I'm sure I saw more than that a few weeks ago.

Thanks for reply zazen999 it's great to know its all being looked after. So much effort has been put into the displays that you get a big build up before you get to the gardens.
I wish all the hard workers a good growing year!
The grafted fruit trees were great- and what a good idea to show the differences that the root stock can make!
Just wish there was more veg to be seen.

I live a stones throw from Ryton and have visited lots of times, the staff are lovely really friendly, shop and food fab, however I have never really been that wowed by the garden itself, I do love the English trees patch they have, that is really nice and the willow arbours and tunnels but as you say a trip up to the local lottie would show you far more veg than going to Ryton which is a shame especially if you have come a long way to see it all.
When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant. ~Author Unknown
