  • pests....garden v allotment

Is it just my bad luck or has anyone noticed that the amount of pest infestation on vegetable crops seems inordinatly higher if you try to plant amongst your garden plants as opposed to your allotment.....? we thought it would be a smart idea to plant quick crops in our back garden but have massive problems with blackfly, aphids, slugs, you name it we got it.....! as opposed to our allotment, which is fine thanks...the strange thing is non of these pests are apparent amongst the non edible flowery (other half) bits.....in conclusion we may have to turn over the entire back garden to veggies..... nice.

I will admit that it does sound wrong, I remember Geoff Hamilton going on about how hiding little bits of this and that should actually mean less predation!

The only things I can think of are that people at the lottie spray - and you are reaping the benefit of their work and/or you have such a lovely, lush garden that it supports a wide range of insects and so on and that like in all the movies the baddies get there first but the good guys will win in the end!

Keep trying, it'll all work in the end

I have noticed the same thing. I never need to spray or put down slug pellets because we simply don't get them, but in the garden this is a different matter. I think it is because allotments are quite exposed and flying insects cannot land and take off as well. There is also less shade and the land is more tilled that prevents insect eggs from hatching. Also, our lottie is in the centre, which is farther away from the hedges and all the slugs and flying insects these contain.

My garden has far more crowded conditions than the lottie - more places for the snails to hide!

All my veg are in the garden! However, the plot is small enough to keep on top of. Would hate to have to net up an allotment instead of a garden plot!

Garden pests? The neighbours freakin cats, who won't poo in their own garden, and rotten pigeons.

Allotment pests? Can't say cats, coz they keeps mice away, but pigeons again and #@*^? wabbits!!!!!!!

Yep we got one of those sonic cat scarers.....it doesn't bother the neighbours cat but our teenage lad and his mates can hear it......!
This weekend I spent more time hosing black fly of my veggies from the back garden than I did cooking AND eating them.

You eat black fry you must need quite a lot. Do you skin and bone them first or just coat them in a breadcrumb <gr&d>
