  • Non Political garden related Brexit

    Good afternoon peeps,

So we all know it's coming and we can't escape it so what are you planning to grow this year which you might otherwise not have grown.

Normally I try to grow things which are expensive when in season, don't take up too much space and are high yielding for the effort invested. This year though I'm a little lost, we get about 27% of all our food from the EU, and as our pound is likely to take a further bashing between now and Summer are you looking at growing in a different light this year?

Normally I don't bother with potatoes, onions, and broccoli, and only grow salads in pots but, I'm thinking about intermingling some veg in with my borders this year to widen the diversity of grown produce and increase the volume to limit bought in veg. I'm already covering the ground with polytunnels so I can extend the season and get an extra crop or two into my main beds through the summer.

Anyone else out there thinking a new in the garden this year?
I'm only here cos I got on the wrong bus.

You can't grow them Burnie, you have to mine them.

I didn't change when we went in the EU so I won't be changing when we come out.

Apart from citrus fruit I can't think of much that we can't produce here, especially if you eat seasonally and from local producers.
I want to grow only UK grown seeds too, for multiple reasons, not related to Brexit.

Nah...we bob over to visit relatives and they come here often enough to stock up. Best of both worlds for me!

I just need to make sure I stay on top of my salad leaf sowing, bags of leaves might not be so easily available. Nothing else will change because I try to grow enough to eat, and eat only what I grow

I never grow enough potatoes to last me through, though - so thinking of doing a few big tubs of a Sarpo variety, I can just put the tubs in the shed for storage, once the tops have died back. This to plug the gap, not necessarily Brexit related.

I've just gone through my seed box and ordered some packets from Real Seeds, rather than Franchi - first time in years I've not bought seeds from them tbh. I'll see how the uk seeds/varieties compare.

Might get a few crates of Beaujolais as I can't seem to grow that up here lol.

My reckoning is that stuff we largely buy in from Europe will be where we feel the pain in our wallets the most, particularly fresh stuff where customs delays could cause a lot of wastage and/or be hard to obtain (like when it snowed in Spain last winter).

Fortuitously, I have 3 more beds than this time last year now I’ve got the carpet out so have more growing space.

I will also be putting my tomatoes in the GH this year, in the hope of getting some red ones (all were outdoors last year, and didn’t fare well), putting beds in GH rather than growbags, and trying an early season ‘hotbed’ to extend the growing season.

Maybe I should plant some cider apples too, for when the Beaujolais runs out?

Maybe our own farmers will become more introverted and not rely on exporting as much?

This could be a good thig or a bad thing depending how you look at it. Some of the stuff we grow in allotments and gardens may be commercially produced if farmers think there is a market for it. I think organically grown produce will eventually become the norm rather than the exception, which has to be a good thing.

I will do as I always have done, grow what I like with a spattering of experimentation each year.

I'm guessing that UK seed suppliers won't be able to send seeds to the EU, like back in the old days. So that might affect me. I've tried other suppliers in France and Spain, but prices are either higher (France) or the selections are extremely limited (Spain). And I imagine I won't be able to bring back seed potatoes from the UK either. So I'll be affected yes. But this year at least I'll be carrying on as per, pretty much.
