  • Nearly became the annoying dad

Inspired by the "born in the late 70's thread" I had a quick search for the bike that I learned to ride on, with a view to getting it for Bean (some years in advance I know).

Didn't take me long, and I found someone who's selling one not that far away, for a reasonable price too.

1970s Raleigh Budgie Old Skool bike, good condition birmingham Birmingham used bicycle sports equipment fitness

I decided however, that whilst I would think it's the coolest thing since the A-Team, Bean would probably hate me for getting him a 30+ year old bike (albeit I'd restore it to it's full 70's glory), whilst his friends all had shiny new, disc brake, carbon fibre, super alloy modern bikes.

It's in the exact same colours as mine too...

    Don't do it!!!

Nostalgia for us is total embarrassment for the wee ones.

Who was it who said youth is wasted on the young ones [paraphrasing there of course]....

Buy it for yourself HeyWayne. Don't pretend your buying it for the Bean. I realise it would be completely impractical but you could still 'do it up' and then mount it on the wall of your shed or something. That would turn it into art and imediately quadruple its value.
It is the doom of man, that they forget.

sounds like a brilliant idea to me. Old stuff done up, customised is absolutely ace. Totally cool.

I don't know, these retro bikes are coming back in. You never know, he might be enough of an indie-type to pull it off.

Might buy him the bleached jeans, square shoes and jumper with the patches on the elbows and shoulders to complete the look...

By the time he's big enough to ride it, he might think it's cool and the way trends come round again all his friends might want one too!

I had a bright orange Raleigh Chopper - of which I promptly flew over the handlebars and bit the tarmac! Ive still got the scars to prove it - and the false teeth too.
