  • A national onion shortage?!

I know I've left it late for autumn planted onion sets - but what with one with and a mother...

Logged on last night to order some in the hope I can get them in the ground this weekend. Seemed few places sold them - one site event said "due to the national shortage of onions we are unable to supply...."

I luckily found some via the T&M site, but is it true, a national shortage?

I posted about this shortage a few weeks back. I couldn't buy any sets from Wilkos and was told there was a shortage. I got some from the local garden Centre but they only sold the one variety (Radar).

Try that link! It says "high stocks" for three different types.

Will this be the same situation when it comes to spring sown sets too, do you think? As I had decided not to grow autumn ones this year and only spring ones - but a good few of those....should I try and get a few at this stage for autumn ones??

Wierd, a national onion set shortage maybe but the crops of onions in the fields outside our town were very healthy indeed this summer.

There'll be no national shortage here ,

I've got 300 sets planted of Radar, Troy and Red Cross. A trug full of Japanese senshoo/whatevers grown from seed. trough full of Hi Keepers from seed and a couple of buckets/spare grow bag (had lettuces before) of white lisbons. Got my sets from Marshalls.

No worries, it was not the main topic of the thread, so a search may not have found it anyway.

I'd ordered some from an offer in a mag. & got a letter saying they'd sold out & looked around about 3 garden centres until I found some 'Senshyu', just 2 packs left in a big garden centre so there does seem to be a shortage. When I asked in one small place though they'd sold out of the autmn japanese ones but said they would be getting more onion sets, red & white in at the end of October, she said for later planting so I don't know which kind she meant but she did say there was a shortage of autumn sets.

Just called Thompson & Morgan as I had yet to recieve my order (email confirmation on the 20th Oct). Lady said that they'd had trouble fulfilling all their orders and that the warehouse "man" had organised what he had left and was sorting them as we speak (no, me neither).

I should receive my order within the next week or so.

                          Am I too late?

There are some still available in garden centre's around my way and a postal order will get some for anyone postal order will be returned if I fail to get any. Offered this a while back and got some for someone on here but no postal order arrived so I am giving some away but I think what I have will be gone now. But if you want some I will look at the weekend to make sure I can still get them there were red and white ones a few days ago.

Thanks Jackie, but I'm sticking with common garden onions (both my white and red ones bolted this year), a very kind offer none the less.
