  • On my plot, I'm the ...

... only one who appears to plant asparagus as per the planting instructions provided by the nursery. (i.e. 1', not 2' as "they should be")

... the only one that has people standing over me, tutting whilst putting in said crowns at said distance.

... the only one with big raised beds (much to the dismay of countless others - yet they're after the wood I've used and have spare of!)

... only one who looks like he's going to be the first one to tell another plot holder to go forth and multiply!

... only one who lets things set seed (on purpose).

    over to you!

....only one last year to be making compost tea and to be scoffed at for doing it.
....only one to have a lovely lush plot that didn't suffer from nutrient wash-out from consistently heavy rains.
....only one who won first prize on site.... HA

I'm the only one who gives others any of my spare plants/seedlings - community spirit isn't dead.
I'm the only one who started with raised beds and got mocked for doing so - NOW QUITE A NUMBER OF THE DISSENTERS ARE BUILDING THEM. Sniggers.
I'm the only one who planted asparagus and got accused of planting fancy vegetables. So what? I don't want to buy it from Peru and I don't like fartychokes, but I don't tell you that you're wrong.
I'm the only one who grew chick peas for Garden Organic last year and put a sign up. Nobody took any interest.
I'm the only one who mulches with compost and gets told that the old way is to turn the soil after adding muck. It's my life surely?
I'm the only one who puts her earphones in when the grizzly old *** next door arrives because I really cannot be ***** to put up with your diatribe.

Moral of the story Chris is that you do what you like lad and if your asparagus comes up - mine refuses to comply -I will be over Until these folks pay your allotment fees for you then they have no say over what you do. I guess they are only jealous. Tell them you didn't realise they were so green. Should keep them pondering a while. Pleased your crowns arrived at last lad.

Tell yourself they are learning from you! I have a friend who kept telling me she had been gardening for years, she'd done it all etc (in the nicest possible way.) She gave my Polytunnel book back to me having said it was interesting but she was too busy to read it. Guess who is now growing her carrots in loo rolls, hanging her strawberries up on the grow bars in mushroom boxes to keep the slugs off, starts her tomatoes off a month earlier than previously and (trumpets please) might actually get round to washing her poor green hole of a tunnel this year since she can't get over how bright mine is!

(In fairness she is a very organically minded, eco friendly gardener and has been for years and years.)

PS. I just don't have enough time to say hello to everyone as they join so please take this as a delighted to see you here!

I'm the only one who seems to be doing something/anything on my plot.

And when my next door neighbour is there I'm doing everything wrong (despite lots of positive feedback from the committee members)

And I'm certainly the only one adding compost to each and every bed to the dismay of a few, as the plot was over grown and is now very very dry my thoughts are if I add lots of compost to my ill treated and depleted beds now I will have a good start to the season then next year I can add my compost bin to the beds!

At the end of the day if being 31 and being guided to garden just like someone else why would I take on a plot I could just sit and watch everyone else. I want to learn by MY mistakes and MY successes.

I'm paying my rent and I am I will do within reason what the hell I like.......Keywords......Within reason
In the following link you can follow my recent progress on the plot

I appear to be the only one on my allotment who is 'experimenting'.

I did some Square Foot Gardening in the little growing space I had available last year, and was very pleased with the results. Some of the other plot holders have been talking about giving it a go this year too.

I have planted some of my potatoes in buckets and some of the same variety straight into the ground, just to see if there is a major difference in yield and ease of growing and harvesting.

I am also going to add a second level to my soft fruit raised beds to hold growbags to grow more strawberries in.

I have both lasagne beds and traditionally double dug beds to compare and contrast yields.

I am planning to use coppiced hazel and willow to create arches over the path for the runner beans to climb up - everyone else is making wigwam-type structures for theirs.

Everyone else seems to be sticking to the old methods, several plots have huge beds, some of which are edged, others are using beds made purely from pallet collars but the usage seems to be traditional rows of mainly standard veg.

I know that Alldigging did some experimenting in the past, with planting potatoes straight into straw and manure, and tried a melon growing in a bale of straw but I don't think she is doing anything new this year.

If I'm wrong I'm sure she will let me know very quickly.

                LOL

Erm trying to think now: Got an area of autumn built lasagna beds, got a bedstead to plant peas between, and got some interesting seeds to plant... My hugelkulture bed is ok and I've been using bark and muck to raise levels in beds ... I'm going to do some extreme mulching with straw this year but I sort of did that last year on the spuds so not new really...
I've been making an obelisk out of giant sticks,
There will be lots more mulching going on this year.

                    Chris, I feel your pain.

You know what I'm like. You can imagine how well I go down on my site, being

                    female
                    well under 70
                    vegetarian
                    blondish
                    organicish

I too put my headphones on and just get stuck in. I've now given up trying to have discussions with other plotholders (bar my immediate neighbours, who are lovely).

I go up there to grow things, They go up there mainly to gossip and sh!t stir, and strim down my flowers

Perhaps they believe that flowers don't have a place on an allotment, and you should get on with growing veg for your old man's dinner?
