  • To my extended family

    I'm in a bit of a quandry.

Some of you will know that I've not really been happy in my job of late, and that we're currently going through a 5th round of redundancies - which will result in a total restructuring of the business and how it operates.

Unofficially I've had a chat with one of the bosses, and it would appear that my role/job function will not form part of the UK company in the future - which I expected (in a company of less than 20 people it's difficult to justify one person solely for marketing), but I have also worked for our parent company in Germany since the beginning of the year and this may be where I fit in the future, but we'll have to wait and see.

The trouble is I've lost all faith in the company, my own abilities and morale here is beyond dire (we've had people pleading for voluntary redundancy).

This lunch time I met with a director of an agency who is interested in taking me on. He sees it as necessary to take his business forward, and has already proposed both the position, and my filling the position to two of the other directors who are 'on-side'. He is going to propose the idea to the last remaining director, but doesn't see that he'll get a different response.

Here is my dilemma - the role will mean a lot of being away from home, spending a few nights a month away from home, lots of driving, commuting into London a couple of days a week, but also some working from home. He is adamant that I am more than capable of doing the job and that I'd be good at it, and would enjoy it - he wouldn't be talking to me about the job if he didn't I guess. His only concern is that it's very different from what I'm used to at the moment (being 15 minutes from home).

He did say that the company doesn't have the financial backing that my current employers do - but also, his company is 30 years old next year, so can't be all bad can it?

    I'm being daft aren't I?

I've been here nearly 9 years now - I think I'm just too comfortable.

It sounds like a pretty good opportunity - will be hard work, but should be rewarding at the same time.

I'm just sounding off - can you tell?

Thank you for putting up with this rambling.

It sounds like you are more than ready for a change, HW. The only downside will be a change in domestic routine - something you and Lady Wayne need to talk over in depth. I faced this with my OH - but he was far happier once he made the move and we had more quality time together than before.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Scuse me for being thick ( tis the heat)...

So- do you have 3 alternatives?
...stay with that company and end up in Germany
      ...be unemployed
...new job, less pay, less family and leisure time.

Hmm...I'd go with the latter and look for another job whilst you are at it.

      ...or maybe the first.....

My gut feeling is that you are a family guy and enjoy your 'home/family/lottie time'...the last one wouldn't give you any of that
...or would you like to relocate to Germany - if that's an option????

We've just downsized and destressed- I'm not really the one to be nattering with!

As you've said yourself too, you may not have a choice! A change could make you into a new man - provided LadyWayne agrees!

Option one: Be made redundant and start looking
Option two: Work for Germany, but remain in this office
Option three: Work for new company, more money, flexible working hours (but probably longer).

Once you have no job it's MUCH harder to get a job.

Have you got a timeline for the redundancy; and would this coincide with being able to take the other job? Would they go for voluntary redundancy if you asked for it?

The redundancies will be in place in the next couple of weeks. The new job (which doesn't exist really barring formalities) is proposed to start in September - though he said they'd move it forward if my circumstances changed.

Yes, whichever choice you finally end up with do it while you have a job.

Can't see owt wrong with wanting to be near to home, to not being stressed with travel/work & seeing lots of Bean, Lady W & the veggies?

                  How ambitious are you?

In that case, I think you need to get the 'at risk' letter, and negotiate a settlement and start the new job in Sept.

Depends on your ambition Wayne and whether you are a risk taker. I'm sure you'll make the right decision with Lady Wayne's input.

Make sure you talk to LadyWayne about being away from home and the hours. Things are much easier when you're near and will be around, especially with Bean.

Sounds like you're ready to move so do what Zaz suggests and get the redundancy to coincide with new job starting.

                        Good luck!

It sounds like the new job will be challenging, and could be what you need to make you rethink.

But..do you like/mind/hate driving, if you hate driving and will need to do lots you will soon be unhappy unless you can swop to the train
Will you and lady Wayne be able to adjust to you working at home sometimes? It requires a certain type of determination to continue with your job when you can hear Bean crying, or laughing, but it has to happen.
Do you have family back-up in place for days when you are away from home in case there is a problem that LW cant quite manage on her own?

Other than those thoughts Wayne I think that if you and your lady talk things through well you will be fine, whatever you decide. And I agree with Zazen. If you are going to change, sort out your redundancy package, as this will give you a certain help regardless. Don't lose it by agreeing to a transfer unless you will gain a lot from a transfer.

Of course, if you could afford it, you could do like what my friend did, and let Lady Wayne go to work and become a house hubby...depends on finances of course.
