  • Monty Don on BBC Question Time

It was good to see Monty Don in fine fettle on BBC’s Question Time yesterday (Thursday) evening and not showing any signs of the slightly odd announcements of infirmity that ended his Gardener’s World role, whatever the ins and outs of that particular media runaround. And making some popular points too about the ordinary person’s attitude to banker bonuses, the current economic mess and climate change. I was going to post a note titled “Any bankers on this List?”, not particularly to pillory them (though the bonus culture is quite foreign to me and I think generally undesirable) but to introduce the question of where we should be going now that the bank-driven debt economy is falling to pieces? Tee hee, Brits tend not to undertake their revolutions with violence on the streets but we do seem to be at a crossroads with every attempt being made to keep the old system just about functioning…. Whereas perhaps “grow your own” embodies a philosophy and approach to life that’s about as different to bank debt as it’s possible to imagine? I know which one I side with but how do we persuade everyone else there might be alternative and preferable ways of organising life? Monty Don for P.M.?

On the gardeners world blog it does say he will “stand down as the main presenter of the programme.” I am sure he will be back in some capacity soon. He was very good on QT

      Bazzaboy:

You can't persuade anyone to do anything...you can only do it your way and enjoy it.

I studied many types of cultures and societies over the years...and they've all got their problems/issues/unsavoury practices.

Even in the simple art of managing allotments, unfortunately cut throat politics abounds; as they say...'Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely'...

Meanwhile, I will sign up to the Monty Don Appreciation Society and wish him all the best in his recovery - it sounds as if he is getting back to full strength - which is great news.

I loved Monty on Gardeners World, he is a gentle giant and his love and passion for what he does shone through. I stopped watching when Toby came on, he has no passion.

Monty Don was great on Gardeners World and I miss him too, but I guess the travelling up and down to Berryfields from his home in Herefordshire, along with his writing commitments, tending his own large garden and bringing up his kids and spending too much time away from Sarah got to him. I think most of us would struggle with that kind of regime after a while.

Monty has suffered for many years from depression and gardening to him as it is to many of us was an escape from reality and the trials of a hectic life.

It was good to see him looking more like his old self on Question Time and I wish him all the best.

Gardening should always be a pleasure and never a chore, only someone forgot to tell the weeds
