  • Lent???

I'm an old-fashioned gal but I can't be the only one doing something for Lent? I'm giving up alcohol. I do it every year on the assumption that if I ever can't I'm REALLY in trouble! It's also a good opportunity to send some of the money saved (and it can be a surprising amount!) to a good cause. Plenty of those around at the moment.

So come on - anyone giving anything up?

As a good Catholic girl, I know I should give something up, so I'm giving up being NORTY. I'm not going to grumble or complain about anything (I'll save it up till after Easter, then it might not be worth complaining about)

No, the strange religion i was brought up in didn't do lent, or easter But i do try and fast on Atonement. It usually ends up being a dry biscuit and water day as proper fasting makes me horribly ill which tends to overshadow the point of the day a bit

Hadn't thought about it - I had a migraine on Tuesday night so we didn't even have pancakes

Plus, not being a Christian, Lent doesn't have any particular spiritual significance for me - we don't celebrate Easter either (Christmas is different - the Church just "borrowed" the date when they realised they couldn't make the converted pagans give up their traditional Midwinter feast!).

I am cutting down gradually on my vices, though. Less coffee, alcohol and sugar - and more work on the allotment!

Having lived for a while in Turkey & also having Muslim neighbours in this country,I quite prefer the idea of Rammadan...admittedly hard going during the day when it's hot,but some seriously lovely feasting after dark!!The ladies have my admiration though...preparing the feasts during the day & managing to resist temptation!!
I'm going to try & give up getting cross with the kiddies...not easy today as I have one off genuinely poorly(she's not testing me!)& one definately skiving!!!

I'm giving up alcohol for Lent too, I have done for the past 3 years and I find it surprisingly easy. I drink too much during the year and this is about the only chance my liver has for a rest.

I don't usually "do" New years resolutions either and I am surprised at my willpower during Lent tbh

I gave up alcohol for a week , then fell so hard off the wagon I bounced. Too late to give red wine up for lent, but will start next week.

My ex-boss's mum used to give up champagne for Lent every year. We used to laugh but it was a real hardship for her.
