  • Laminate flooring.

Just wondering if any of you have a laminate floor in your kitchen.
We are having a new fitted kitchen installed and we want to have the floor done as well.
Our floor runs from the front door, through the hall, into the kitchen and out into the conservatory. We have a laminate floor at the present time and have not had any problems with it but people keep saying we should'nt put it in the kitchen in case we have water spilled on it as it would mean having to replace the whole lot.
Any thoughts or other advice would be appreciated.
Is there a waterproof laminate on the market?

And your hands begin to harden.

I have it in both sitting rooms, the hall and the conservatory. I've spilled water on it numerous times when watering plants in the conservatory. I've spilled wine, beer and fizzy drinks in both sitting rooms and it gets a bit wet in the winter in the hall from people walking in and out. I've never had any trouble with it and I've been here for 3 years now.

I have tiles in the kitchen and utility room, I far prefer them.

'Quick step' or other high end laminates will
Cope better, they're not cheap though. We're probably go for quick step in our living room/hall - I'd love real wood but we need something more durable.

I'll be replacing the laminate in the big sitting room with real wood eventually, it just means the kids will never be allowed in there though.

Yup, go for the dear end of the market. Cheaper makes cannot cope with getting wet, I have even had the 'wood' pattern fade or peel off. Tiles are cold [unless you have underfloor heating] but they are bombproof

I had laminate flooring fitted throughout my bungalow at the end of 2011. It's the best thing I ever did - so easy to keep clean, just a quick swish round every day (takes all of 10 mins for the whole house) plus a mop right through once a week using Cif laminate floor cleaner.

As long as I wipe up any spills as soon as i notice them, there've been no problems in either the kitchen or the bathroom. I even had the washing machine pour water all over the floor with no problem. (I was worried that the boards might swell up or something equally awful happening but they were ok).

I bought the flooring from B&Q - not the very cheapest but not the most expensive either.

We have laminate throughout our lounge and kitchen. Lounge is not water resistant at all, kitchen is semi resistant. I know there are grades which are waterproof as Potty has confirmed ^^^^^^^^^^

I help run a painting & decorating company and Quick Step is the one our flooring guys always recommend for kitchens and bathrooms.

I'd also consider under floor heating if it's at all viable financially. My folks have had laminate in their living room, hall and kitchen and really regret not getting under floor heating, especially in the kitchen where they only have a little plinth heater and no rads!

We have laminate in our kitchen and its not the waterproof variety and i shall now tell you a simple test that was carried out on the flooring which has determine that it DOES NOT SWELL when wet

My partner has a daughter, with one of them hypo disorders (she is the biggest pest) she asked to do the washing up once when she was 7 so i left her to clean her plate and cup. 5mins later i return to find the 'child of a thousands horrors' using the cup to pour water on the floor.

Now from the evidence ive gathered my laminate is fine and survived to live another day

We've had it in the kitchen for 13 years and it's been great.

About 10 years ago I stopped in the Hotel De La Terresse in Fort Mahon right on the sea front.

If you wanted to have a drink after 11pm they sent you down to a cellar bar, nice comfortable settee's and armchairs with laminate flooring.

They must have had a flood at some time because my mate and I could play see-saw on a 4 seater settee. No elf & safety there then.

I didn't trust laminate floors either, but didn't want tiles, so went for a vinyl floor. I had Karndean fitted in the kitchen and just love it.
