  • Keeping the magic alive

Just wanted to share this with you. My daughter's three girls stayed with me on Saturday until Sunday lunchtime. They are 12, 11 and 7. I was talking about Christmas to the youngest when she confided in me:
"Nanny, I don't believe in Father Christmas any more, but don't tell the others or mummy, daddy and grandad because they'll be really upset. I can pretend until after". Ah Bless.

That is so beautiful Florence what I lovely little girl. In our search for the truth we tend to forget that ignorance is sometimes bliss. All bubbles are not for bursting.

When our children came to that age we just told them if they didn't believe there there wouldn't be any presents and they continued to hang up their stocking until all three of them left home.
sometimes you have to make your own magic.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

I'm 27 and my big brother's 29, he still jumps on my bed on Christmas morning and demands I wake up (guaranteed hangover and all) to open my stocking. My mum wouldn't dare to suggest stopping doing it.

When I'd stay at my dad's for Christmas, being the kind of guy that did all his Christmas shopping the night before at the local petrol station, we'd end up with toilet rolls, WD40, the contents of the fruit bowl, and a couple of years running a copy of some very dodgy blue magazine!

Disclaimer: By "mum" and "dad" I mean Santa's advisors...obviously!

One of my kids' teachers used to say "Those who don't believe don't receive!" I think that sorts 'em out!

that is wonderful. I'll remember that

We're planning to take our little boy to Lapland next winter - but not in the usual way. A flight to Helsinki then this fantastic overnight train up north. 3 bunk bed, a little shower in the cabin etc - a small restaurant onboard. I've taken this train before and it is a magical experience. You literally feel as if you are being transported to another world. You wake up to see SILLY amounts of snow . the trees totally overburdened. Much much cheaper and far more exciting than those rip off day trip flights. You book everything online and apart from when it gets really REALLY cold and the train freezes up, everything runs like clockwork. I just can't wait to do it!!! another 12 months

My eldest boy (5), came home from school to tell me that 'Christmas isn't about getting presents mummy you know. It's all about baby Jesus'. 'Oh', says I, 'does that mean Father Christmas isn't to bring you any presents this year?' 'NoI do want them' he says, 'I've been a very good boy and baby Jesus would want me to have some'.

                          Can't argue with that!

We are always at a loss how to give christmas pressies that give more value than pounds and shillings. I just wonder if next year we could afford to do it for our lot. I could always buy a scratch card or something.

Wow Moola that sounds wonderful. Janeyo that's one bright little lad!

Of course Father Christmas exists, it's just grown ups that try to spread rumours he doesn't.

Can I have a new greenhouse please with lots of shelves and everything? Love from Hashette aged 46 and a half
