  • Ideas to keep me occupied whilst 'laid-up'

OK, I will probably have to spend a period of eight weeks or so doing nothing, fairly soon. I'm not looking forward to it, because, although I am a terribly lazy moo, I hate not being able to get out and about. I won't be allowed to do any gardening, or drive, do the Horses, or muck out the Chooks or anything for the first couple of weeks, at least.

So, I would like suggestions to keep my brain occupied during the day. I have loads of books and magazines to read, the internet too, obviously, but wondered if that's going to be enough. I don't think it is, and no, I don't knit, or watch daytime TV - I'd rather die. (I hope my Anaesthetist doesn't read that last comment!)

    So, whaddy'a reckon?

      Hi G4P

I am in the same situation - due for an op sometime after the middle of October - everything I normally do is outside and active (hillwalking, the lottie, etc).

I can't stand daytime tv either, but what about borrowing a stack of dvd's to watch instead? I'm going to watch again some I haven't seen for ages and borrow some more from friends. Unlike you though, I do knit and crochet and have a spinning wheel so I can produce all my own wool. I'm hoping to learn how to do peg weaving as well.

Suppose planning what to grow in the lottie next year will take up some enjoyable time as well.

Despite all that, I just know that I will be bored stiff and will want to be outside.

If you are of the studying kind, then perhaps on OU course would be an idea.

There's always jigsaws........... or even chatting on the Vine

Hope all goes well for you anyway.

Nintedo DS, with lots of puzzle games.
        A puzzle book.
        A laptop.
        Mobile phone of course.
And whatever you decide to take, I hope all goes well for you.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

          Now THAT's scarey!

I mean, I went to school, obviously, but that was thirty years ago. I didn't go to college, I went straight into full-time employment. Although, I did work-related exams, in two different fields, so there's a possibility that my brain hasn't totally stagnated!

Cheers, Hon - I wouldn't have thought about it.

Now, find me a subject! LOL

I spent my 12 weeks when I was resting after an op doing sudoku and drifting in and out of consciousness with the painkillers they gave me. Oh, and pottering and learning about gardening. Hmm....funny that!

I found it went really quickly as when you are 'in' it you give yourself little goals to keep you going. Like peeling a potato or two 2 days after the op, as my op was to repair smashed up elbow [they couldn't tell me how many pieces it had been in] - just doing that was a major achievement.

I also watched Seinfeld and pretty much every episode at that. It was on Paramount comedy at the time.

I was laid up for 3 months about 20 year ago and that's when i started making dollshouse miniatures, probably not everyone choice but it helped me and its still one of my indoor winter hobbies.

I was off work for 8 weeks with a broken foot. It does go much quicker than you think it will, and the Vine is wonderful occupational therapy, I can vouch for that.

You're more than welcome to take some making of tissue paper flowers off my hands. I might actually manage to finish a pew end for the wedding...!!

You'll probably have to deal with lots of visitors and well wishers as well. My dad (bless him) would have visited me everyday. I had to ask him tactfully not to!

I have already had offers of being pampered at my In-laws', bless em - but I know I'd come home a stone heavier. Being here, at my Folks' Granny Annexe, means zero peace and quiet, as both can talk for England, so I'd have to keep pretending to fall asleep. Then they'd probably not notice, and just keep talking at me!

My Sister has invited me over to hers too, so, if I'm allowed to fly, that may be an option to escape.

Thanks for some great suggestions. I'm even considering getting my pencils out, if I can find 'em after thirty years and however many house moves!
