  • i need a favour please

ok i have a large area of wasteland out the bck of my house, and i want to plant it with trees ... now obviously that would be expensive, so i need your help

my plan is to plant fruit /nut/bird food trees/bushes etc now as most of the fruit in the supermarket is from abroad, they wont be much use, but if any of you could save me pips/stones etc from trees that grow in the uk that would solve my problem .... i know lots won't come true from seed ... but the birdies and other fruit eating critturs wont mind .... and if they come out good ... then i can take some too. the varieties really arent important

thanks lovely people i will happily send an sae

well i haven't been growing anything except for whats grown accidentally .... from things that seeded (i think i'm an accidental gardener, cos they seem to be doing much better on their own, than when i try to look after them)

and i didn't really have much to talk about lol .... and anyway its for the wildlife ... not just me lol

nope not dead ... yet ... though the docs are trying their best to kill me off with the pills they keep feeding me. .... other than that ... fine ta .... been decorating and dead heading flowers

oooooooooo fanks bob will do it now xxxxx

What are you looking for seed/pip/stonewise????

Maybe you should also be thinking of some seed heads for the birds????

I have a pretty shrub in the garden, bright yellow flowers followed by blue-black berries, which some birds (especially blackbirds and thrushes) go wild for.
The leaves are like a tiny holly leaf. I can send a package of berries/seeds soon (ie when I'm sure they are ripe).

Sounds like berberis? The birds do love these. They hide in the impossibly thorny branches of this in my sister's garden, when one of the neighbourhood mogs slopes by.

Nice to see you again chuck!

Thanks Flum, I think it may well be Berberis. Ours seems to be able to have 2 flowering sessions a year, so that right now it has near-ripe berries, AND a few flowers.... Odd, but rather nice too!

wow yes, thanks everyone .... Di raspberries are for peoples lol ........ i have a patch earmarked for blackberries, of which i have loads of wild ones in my hedge ........ theres lots of them, and the birdies seem to be doing a good job of spreading the seeds everywhere all by themselves

anyway, it's a long term project, so any kind of trees, even big ones which have seeds nuts fruit that birdies, squirrels, and mice eat, we have hawthorns, and elderberries, already too ... which they can eat ..... but really, anything with berries, and yup seed heads for birdies even things that will grow into big trees, the space for planting, is an old railway embankment, that was sabotaged to build an industrial estate, and it used to be just a nice patch for birdies to nest and live ..... now theres hardly any nest sites, so the aim eventually is to have trees to put nestboxes in, but obviously it would be better if all the trees have edible stuff for critters ...... all interspersed with plenty of wild flowers and grasses and places for birdies to hide from cats, and i may even try more frogspawn next year, see if we get more than 2 frogs coming back ....... i will probably buy some more ladybirds and hoverflies ....... and maybe eventually, see if anyone wants to keep bees on the land, once it's all in motion who knows xxx
