Just a cheapie acoustic one would be ok. You'll also need to learn to tune it, but there are gizmos and gadgets for that, and plastic strings will stretch more, and therefore need more tuning in.
But I'm not an expert.

OH just got himself a guitar, he bought an acoustic guitar package that had a dvd, guitar tuner and a few other things with it. The guitar tuner wasn't worth the money, found that the dvd was better for helping tuning strings, just by listening to the sounds. He has had to already buy couple of extra strings (the ones a the bottom, but I think they might be the top strings as they are the thinnest - I know nothing about guitars!)

I learnt to play the guitar when I was at secondry school (12 years old) I haven't played in years, but I can tell you one thing...Its addictive, once you've cracked the reading music bit, where to put ya fingers...you'll love it. Fender, Yamaha & Ibanez are all good beginers guitar's, I'd advice you to go to a GOOD music shop that will let you try, get the feel of a guitar first before hand. Agreed with the good music shop bit.
I dunno how they are in the land of England's natural enemies (I actually do love France!

) but over here a good music shop is worth far more than the extra you'll pay versus prices in online shops or music superstore type places.

Building a relationship with a local shop, getting your first guitar there, moving up to your new one, visiting them for strings, plectrums, repairs (if they do them) and so on and all the support that comes with that can in invaluable.

I've never learned to play guitar, but have played a couple of other things in the past and having someone to go to for help, who knows you, can sort it out there and then and maybe give you a decent price as a regular is a wonderful thing.

My son plays the guitar and harmonica and does some local gigging as a (kind of) Bob Dylan inspired performer, he taught himself and used chords from the internet to learn different songs.
Although he has always been quite musical and plays the drums and keyboards too. I, on the other hand, cant even whistle in tune!

Hubby started on a second hand Yamaha and after a few years got a Freshman and now has a Strat. Start cheap and work your way up.

Sounds like me on a Saturday night, but thats what I aim to do FF. I will get myself a cheapy first of all, to see if I like it and more to the point, if it likes me. Then I'll sell a couple of the grandkids and buy myself a better one.

I tried to learn guitar once, but;

a) I have the patience of a not very patient person.
b) I have the build more akin to a base player than 6-string/lead.

I would advise anyone after a good cheap acoustic guitar to get one of these:

Keep at it. That is the only way to learn and as long as you have ear enough to know that your guitar is in tune you can teach yourself up to a point, though I would reccomend you find a good teacher.

I brought an electric guitar a few years back but gave up as I just could not play it, I then brought a cheap acoustic guitar off ebay and had it re-strung and after trying to teach myself for a year I gave up and started having lessons, I pay �10 for 30mins at a local guys house, and it was the best thing I ever did, I can now make sounds that sound like songs lol, still a long way to go yet though, but I would reccommend taking lessons and never give up
