  • How long should in-laws from overseas stay for a visit?

I'm asking this rather strange question here because all the other forums and websites I frequent are also seen by my in-laws or my husband, and I've done enough moaning to him for a while. I just want to know if I'm being unreasonable in what I think is too long.

My father-in-law is from Australia and is currently visiting us. I will tell you for how long after I get a few results back on the poll. I don't want it to influence anyone's vote. But in your opinion, how long do you think would be acceptable for your mother- or father-in-law to stay with you in your house? Assume there is a guest room at least for them and they are coming from half-way around the world, not 2 streets down.

I quite like my in-laws, although they are a little bonkers... I could cope with my MiL indefinitely, but my FiL would drive me crazy after a week.. So I've compromised and said 3-4 weeks. If they'd come half-way round the world...
Some friends of ours that come over from NZ usually try and get hold of a holiday cottage nearby for part of the time so that they don't drive their relatives (or themselves) mad.

My Mum just went back home to UK after staying with us for 2 months.

I don't think that my OH minded - you would have to ask him that I think that it was long enough and my Mum is sensitive enough to realise that she can't stay with us forever (even though she would love to)

We are lucky, she doesn't need any "looking after" and OH has his study to retreat into if he wants. I know that she is my mum and not an in-law but I'm sure I would feel the same if it was his mum (although sadly, she died many years ago and it is even further for her to come from where she is )

Scarey, I think there's a big difference between your Mum and someone else's. I think my mom is great too, but she drives me batty, never mind how my husband must feel. When it's your own flesh and blood, it's a lot easier to tell them that too.

I guess if your inlaws are dead, you'll just have to use your imagination or remember what they used to be like.

I could only put up with either my mum or Mr OWG's mum for 3-4 MAX even if they had come half-way round the world!

We spent a week abroad with my mum a couple of years ago, and I'd had enough then!

as i haven't any inlaws it would depend if i liked em or not ... my own parents live in spain now, but my dad still drives me mental after about 4 hours .... my mum could saty as long as she wanted if she left him behind

I've opted for 3-4 weeks. If it was my inlaws then thats a different matter, my (now deceased) FIL could stay as long as he wanted but with my (now deceased) MIL the minute she stepped into my home I would need to have been very heavily sedated. Major source of fighting was my hubby did not marry into money (I'm a poor wee street urchin) Hubby's siblings did marry into lots of money.

                      I went for 3-4 weeks.

My MIL drives me insane and I can just about manage 3-4 days with her! BUT if she had to travel half way round the world it would have to be for longer. Longer than a month, however, and I would be ready to commit murder I think! And I think my hubby would agree He, however, can tell her when she's getting on his nerves, whereas I feel I have to be polite and bite my tongue whilst I seethe inside

Two weeks - any longer they can rent somewhere or get a hotel room!

As both Madderbat's parents are dead & Madderbat can't stand her sister (not spoken for 5 years) It will not happen.
