  • help me find places to visit in Yorks

I am going to a friend's cottage next week with the children and a friend and her children. I have not been to the area before but think there may be local grapes who can tell me where to visit? (4 children under 6 if that helps with activities)

We are going to be near Stargarth and Hawes in Yorks. I don't mind driving for an hour or so to get somewhere. That will be long enough after the 4 hrs plus to get there!

My friend has said that Skipton has a castle so that is a good place to start.

    Thanks

oh yes and we were only there for 4 full days! I like to pack it all in!!!

You must go to York, If the kids are into Heartbeat then take them to Goathland on the Whitby road, once there it would be a shame not to carry on out to Whitby. The kids would love Flamingo Land where there is the Zoo & the rides for the kids. C'mon Yorkies, help me out.....

*one moment whilst I and all the other Tykes beat Bob into submission...

any/all of the abbeys are fabulous. Fountains is perhaps the best for kids - lots of interactive stuff, adventure playground etc - but Rievaulx, Jervaulx, Bolton, Byland and the rest are all superb too.

Harrogate is a lovely Victorian town with great boutique stylee shops.

Brimham Rocks (maybe more than an hour?) is stunning and brilliant fun for any little boys who might want to clamber up and over stuff, plus mum and dad can pick a ton of bilberries.
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery

Cant quite tell which bit of Yorkshire you're in, but according to the map, Hawes is on the Dales....so how about Haworth?

I am told I will be in Wensleydale country and am under orders to bring back cheese lol, and that Richmond is about 20 miles.

Haworth is quite a treck from Hawes. Depends on the traffic I guess, but in the summer holidays it's likely to be slow Google maps reckons an hour and 20 minutes, but that'll be on a good day.
If you did decide to go there, the Keighley and Worth Valley railway runs steam trains from Keighley up to Haworth, and, they have a museum and a couple of shops selling tons of steam train memorabilia including replica engines and Thomas stuff. My boys used to love going there, and meant they put up with the other sightseeing & shopping in Haworth

Out of the list posted by BM I would recommend Eden Camp, Lightwater Valley, Yorvik, Ingleton Falls/White Scar Cave.

Just a thought, if you go to Skipton castle, it's market day on Mon, Weds and Fri and town will be heaving with coach-fulls of pensioners on outings... You might want to avoid that!

If you get to Harrogate, Olivers fish and chip shop and cafe on cold bath road is a must, so is fish and chips on the harbour at Whitby.

Richmond has a good castle - enormous inner bailey - great for kids to run around in and not get too far away from you! I thought it was a charming little 'old fashioned' town when we went but that was 5-6 years ago.
