  • Happy 70th Desert Island Discs.....what would you take?

Given most of us have no chance of being invited on to radio4s flagship show I was wondering which 8 discs and 1 book you would take on to the island.......and not forgetting a luxury item!

No going to ponder before posting mine..........

    Loving my allotment!

if you were clever and only wanted music and books, your luxury item could be a "Tablet PC" with all your books and music on it.. lol.

OH but of course, is the luxury item allowed to be my wife? :P

8 discs = most played albums on my phone right now; Verve 'A Storm in Heaven', 'A Northern Soul' and 'Urban Hymns', Richard Ashcroft 'Human Conditions', Pearl Jam 'Vs', Foo Fighters 'Greatest Hits', Chase & Status 'No More Idols' and Scroobius Pip 'Distraction Pieces'.

Book, difficult one. Would have to be a huge tome of some sort, possibly the entire works of Shakespeare. Could spend plenty of time deciphering the language, and then even longer analysing the texts. It wouldn't necessarily be a pleasure, but would keep the grey matter active

Luxury. Hmmm. While the temptation would be to say something like the Kindle, it would soon run out of battery, and then what would you do? A massive survival type tool, with a flint/fire-starting-tool incorporated would be much more sensible

Book, how about an 'edible plants' identification thing?
Luxury item, a dog (they only allow ones too small to do your hunting for you, which wouldn't be ideal, because I simply prefer bigger dogs, but it would do).
          Records.....
I wonder whether they would allow me my own compilation LP? Otherwise I'd need 3 to contain all of the tunes on there
          Mike Oldfield Elements
Simon and Garfunkel Bridge Over Troubled Water
Essence of England (a collection of classical stuff by English composers)
Then we have 50 Golden Tracks by the Shadows
          Slade -The Collection 81-87
          Best of the Spinners
          Victor Borge Phonetically Speaking
Flanders and Swann - Transport of Delight
Billie Jo Spears 20 country Greats.

There are plenty of others, but those are what I play most often, so.....
Nothing very new, some very old, but a wide range of different stuff, to fit a lot of different moods.
Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.

You're given Shakespeare and the Bible, so you can pick another...

I'd take the complete works of Dickens, because I've always found them too wordy to plough through, but alone on a desert island, I might just get them read!

edit: mind you, that's me being good. What I would really love to take is the complete works of Terry Pratchett (love the Luggage, love Binky, love Greebo, deep respect for Granny W)

Oh well, if they give you Shakespeare and the Bible, then hmmmmm. Probably Zazen's 'Literary Theory: An Antholgy' which she kindly lent me, and that would take me aeons to understand it all, and then further aeons could be spent applying the theories to the Shakey and the Bible

Soz,I am a bit confused here,I was under the impression that the discs were single tracks not albums

With you on that one BB, they should be single tracks if we're sticking to the format. Makes it really, really difficult.

Sorry to throw a spanner in the works, but how does one play a disc (of any sort) on a Desert Island? Wind up gramophone?

I'm going to have an awful time selecting just eight tracks and one book. One of the eight would have to be Billy Joel's Honesty....

My luxury would have to be the BH. I'd be lost without him.
