  • Given up plot today:(

Made a very difficult decision today.

Have given up my plot, due to health have a torn ligament in my shoulder and have been unable to dig or do anything really, tried using my left arm but it has been hard.

Decision was made easier by recieving a letter today from the secretary asking me to have my plot sorted by tomorrow!!

Hubbie is going to build me some raised beds in the garden and will continue to grow veg but on a smaller scale.

To be honest I have found the politics of our allotment challenging as it is a closed shop and did feel like a fish out of water, not everyone who grows veg is as lovely as you guys!

Will continue to come on here and will be looking for tips on one handed gardening!! Miffyxx

Oh Miffy - what a shame. But maybe it's for the best. If your health isn't too good an allotment is an awful lot of hard work. Do you have much space at home? As well as raised beds, you can also grow quite a lot of stuff in large pots. Maybe you will even enjoy it more on a smaller scale. Whatever you decide, please stay on the Vine - we enjoy your company.

Miffy its surprising how much veg you can grow in a small area, you'll have to check out the square foot gardening thread they're full of useful advice.

So sorry to hear this Miffy, but as Rusty says, health comes first. At least with the raised beds at home the politics will be better and the company.

          Keep in touch DTC x

Sorry to hear that Miffy and hope you find it easier at home. I do. With raised beds and pots I manage to grow plenty and it's straight out the back door and into paradise! I can't be doing with closed shops, or the people that run them, you'll be much better off at home. Stay on here, we'd miss you!

I had a good old cry when I read the letter and today of all days our wedding anniversary.
As you have all said though I will be able to manage on a smaller scale.

We are also have a conservatory built in the next couple of months and little does him indoors know but all that window space and floor space for veggie seedlings!! Sshhh dont tell him.

Been thinking alot about it since got the letter and have sent chairman a letter to say how unfair it was to be given a days notice and will now chalk it all up to experience.

Looking forward to the next chapter in my veggie growing experience.

One good thing has come out of it, him indoors has always said a definite NO! to keeping chucks he felt so sorry for me as I sat there with tears running down my cheeks that he said why don't we keep a couple of girls!!! Every cloud does have a silver lining after all. Thank you all for your kind words. Miffyxx

I also lost my big garden about two years ago.I'm still harvesting the raspberries and blackcurrants from there, but have had to try growing everything else in containers. Its still doable, but on a smaller scale. Like everything else, there's always a way around it and I just looked on it as a challenge. I'm sure you will feel the same way and will probably be doing it in a better atmosphere.
The best of luck with it.

Best of luck with the new gardening 'system,' Miffy - It's surprising (as others have said here) how much can be grown in bins and small spaces.

I don't have a lottie (the allotment system isn't well developed in most parts here) but I'm sure you'll save time, not having to travel to and from the allotment.

Good wishes for your arm and more power to your (other) elbow!

Miffy as an old challenge ends a new one begins

I like the idea of the tears - am going to try it with OH as had my eye on a couple of pigs and some turkeys

I don't have an allotment but have LOADS growing in the garden - in the flower beds and on the patio, it's brilliant!

A tough decision to make Miffy, but it sounds like a wise one. You'll be able to grow tonnes of stuff at home with none of the politics.

And can I just say, with or without a lottie, you are still an important member of this forum, with valid advice to share - so don't you dare go away! Okay?

I have just had a response from the chairman re my email, he has said he thought the letter had been sent out two weeks ago and that the secretary is now on holiday for two weeks so he can't talk to her about it.
To be honest though I don't care now.
Thank you to you all for all the advice and I will definitely keep visiting the vine as it is such a supportive community just how I hoped being part of the allotment would be.
I actually feel very releaved now and am excited about planning out my new mini plot and lets face it, I can't be told what I can and can't do in my own back garden as I am the head gardener, planning committee, secretary and have the casting vote!!! Sorted.

Remenber to have a christmas party now your boss of your own mini allotment. Better to make a clean break and not stay on and then think of growing your own as a chore rather than a pleasure.
I grow better beetroot at home. Some would say this is a curse rather than a blessing.

I'm beginning to think that the right decision is not normally the easiest one to make in life, and your health must come first so well done for biting the proverbial bullet.

I'm hoping to to get a lotty soon, so if at any time you're missing it, you can just find my thread that'll probably be grumbling about the politics and remind yourself of what you're not missing
