Think Toby seemed very 'in awe' that he'd got the job! - a bit nervous maybe?
I like him, he's well into his veg and he is really down to earth, though I did disagree with removing the fennel seeds, I don't mind a bit of spring weeding if the garden looks better over winter.
And I got my jap onions today so I will be planting too this weekend!

my OH wondered why one of the previous team hadn't got 'promoted' to introducing the program as a whole. I am still not sure whether the reason I lost interest was the program, or the supper we had just enjoyed (complete with wine, sorry NOT home-made this time)

For me - he will be fine, I have seen and known of him for many a year now.

I would be surprised if anyone could take against him, he is a loveable character and I feel that people* should give him a chance to develop his side of GW

I suspect it's a bit like a new manager coming into a football team, he's got to work with the players he's got for now but I suspect things may change a bit.

The reason none of the other got it was two fold. They wanted a new face to come in ( this team have been at it for some time) and skills.
                • Joe is basically a garden designer ( same class as tax collectors, double glazing sales men and highway men in my book ) as the recent foray into allotments have shown ( it would have been better if they 'd got the guys on the site to do the bit)
                • Alys is a relative newcomer and could be perceived to be inexperienced by the general public ( glasses don't help - I should know )
                • Carol - is a bit too over enthusiastic and has a nice little business going anyway ( which she plugs at every opportunity)
                • And most important - They asked me but I wash my hair on a friday

Where as Toby is relatively young (looking) and has got a gold medal for an ethical garden at his 1st attempt ( not sure the other have) so it gives him kudos on the green front.

I wonder if it will move from Berryfields now as he's based in Devon and must be a bind for him, I fell asleep half way through so I'll have to catch it in I-player

I'd say that's a very fair summing-up NTG and agree with it all

I read that Carol hadn't been asked if she'd like to go for it (don't know if there was an interview process or what) but if she had, then she would have liked it. Yes I know she can be a bit over-enthusiastic but it does show her passion for this hobby of ours. I'm willing to give Toby a fair chance before dissing him, he's obviously got the qualities and experience the producers were looking for. I do miss Monty though
Yes, I too thought there was a bit of tension between the team too. Glad I bought my onions sets yesterday, going to try and get them in the lottie if it ever stops raining long enough to get out there!

Well I watched it last night after posting and I still stick by what I wrote. It's bound to be tense for a start but they are all grown ups so ought to be able to get on with it.

Toby was on Breafast yesterday and he said there wasn't an interview or anything he was just asked would you like to do it. I think he'll turn out to be a bit like Geofferey Smith and My hero Geoff Hamilton and be more of a hands on guy - which may put noses out in the team but hey, they've had about 6 years at it so get on with it.

As for Monty I'm sorry to be a bit in the minority here but I could never warm to him - don't know why as he was proficient at the job and enthusiastic but he didn't make me want to get out and do it unlike Geoff Hamilton.

Still it wouldn't do for us all to be the same would it.

I was always a little tepid with Monty, but the great gods GH and GS made we want to garden - I remember Geoffrey Smith teaching how to dig and Geoff Hamilton doing the silly walk before laying turf - happy days. Mind you, I also really enjoyed Alan Titchmarsh (resolves not to look at thread for a few days until howling stops).

Bit ambivalent about new guy as yet, although I shouted at him and nearly turned off when he said he was 'passionate' about his job - that must be the most overused word in television presenting today - as soon as I hear someone using it (every cook on Masterchef, the professionals included) I think 'cop out' - but I can't think of another word to use instead of passionate, but then I'm not paid to talk!

When it was announced that Toby would be taking over I was a bit disappointed to be honest, but after watching Fridays episode I think he'll do a good job, he's down to earth and seems quite laid back, although I like Carol she's a bit too enthusiastic for me at times and though I enjoyed her veg programmes I wouldn't like to watch her every week as the lead gardener.

I think he may be good for the programme and hopefully we can get away from the dreaded "long borders".
