    Fear of bees

    No idea where this has come from, but Bean is scared of bees.

    Well, it seems more the case that he's scared when they stop buzzing.

    We were in the garden (as I suspect was the majority of the country) yesterday and I was tidying up the decking when I heard a deep buzzing coming from the 'trough' area. Then out popped a huge bee (orange tailed variety) and bumbled around a bit, stopping periodically to do what bees do I guess - he/she looked like he/she was foraging.

    Anyways, Bean was with me and made his little 'cooing' noise - as he does when he's not sure of something. I reassured him and chuckled at the bee, doing all the things silly daddies do, and then the bee stopped again and rustled about in some leaves. At this point Bean started to cry. He seemed better when he could see and hear the bee - but got upset every time it stopped.

    Then we were out at the front of the house and saw another (maybe the same one) bee flying up and around the windows. Bean started again with his cooing until the bee flew off and over the house.

    Bee-zarre.

        Funnily enough my eldest daughter is afraid of bees and wasps (understand the latter a bit more, as they can be nasty b****rs) She wont go in the garden if she thinks there's one around!
        Quite happy to have a tarantula sit on her hand at the zoo though?!?!

        My middle one, (a boy) has been stung by both and is not bothered at all by them?!

        Unfortunately the phobia has rubbed off a little on my youngest daughter Hopefully she'll grow out of it, unlike her big sister!

          Maybe you'd done such a good job making the bee all exciting and lovely that Bean was disappointed when he couldn't see it anymore?

            Nah, he throws/breaks stuff when he's 'disappointed'.

            I'd understand it more if either LadyWayne or I reacted in a way that would make him think that they were scary or dangerous - you know, like when he launches himself off the bed head first and you hear a collective "HAYDEN!!" before one of us catches him by an ankle.

                He might have thought the bee was humming to him Wayne and didn't like it when it played hide & seek, bless him.

                  He is wise beyond his years.
                  Think of a mosquito, when you hear that high pitched annoying "beezzzzzz" you know it's flying about and can do no damage. When it stops ..... it bites.

                  The bee and wasp are very similar.

                  How sage is that young fellow?

                    Little lad
                    Ash was terrified of birds when he was a similar age,he'd scream if one landed on the garden fence.(only lasted a few months)
                    He was also a little worried about bees,but not as much so...strangely he lost his fear directly after standing on one and getting stung

                    I was really worried that my wasp phobia would rub off on them...I really go into a mad state of panic when I see one and have been known to shut a door in the house until Andi gets home if there's one in that room...they just laugh with everyone else about how silly I am

                    Hope it's just short lived,,,,they do make a menacing sound so can understand a littl'un being worried.

                      Thats quite interesting, maybe you have hit the nail on the head, andi&di - my eldest and youngest have never been stung and are weary/afraid
                      Middle one stung a few times, not worried in the slightest!!

                      Though I wouldn't advocate deliberately getting them stung, but maybe they need to learn like that..??

                        I've been stung by almost everything that stings but am not scared of any of them - horses however...

                        My brother is petrified of wasps and devil's coach horses, both having stung/bitten him.

                          I got stung loads by wasps when I was little so I don't think it worked for me though

                            I wouldn't be too worried yet. Perhaps it's just because it's something new for him and he just needs to get used to it. How old is young Master Bean?

                              My little un - 8 months old now just screams at everything she likes, and she screamed at a hoverfly and scared it off.. Bee flew around the decking it was funny watching her trying to locate the buzzing sound
