Hi Nick, I think it's his dad because hen blackies are quite brownie in colour and have quite brown beaks. The cocks are black like the piccy with bright yellowy beaks. Looks like a cock to me. But great piccy and thanks for sharing it.

Provided the picture wasn't taken anywhere in the New World it is almost certainly a chough (Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax), which can be found along the western flanks of the UK and in Ireland. Personally, I have only ever seen them in the west of Scotland, but then, I've not been everywhere!

I don't think it's a chough as they tend to live near the coast & have a slightly downward curving beak.... I suspect it's either from Over the pond or an Asian species .... some type of Starling maybe?
