Hi Nick, I think it's his dad because hen blackies are quite brownie in colour and have quite brown beaks. The cocks are black like the piccy with bright yellowy beaks. Looks like a cock to me. But great piccy and thanks for sharing it.

I dont think its a blackbird, they have a yellow eye ring and yellow beaks, a foreigner methinks.

Ooh, a picnic, I'll make a quiche if you like

I'm with you Piglet, don't think it's a blackbird. Don't know what it is though

You are right. Male blackbirds have yellow, not red, beaks and they don't have red legs.

Provided the picture wasn't taken anywhere in the New World it is almost certainly a chough (Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax), which can be found along the western flanks of the UK and in Ireland. Personally, I have only ever seen them in the west of Scotland, but then, I've not been everywhere!

I don't think it's a chough as they tend to live near the coast & have a slightly downward curving beak.... I suspect it's either from Over the pond or an Asian species .... some type of Starling maybe?

So, I thought I'll make a quiche and someone else could bring some chicken legs - who wants to bring the ginger beer?

Oh dear, chicken legs and a picnic - I feel a joke comming on....

You're alright Nick, I'm feeling a bit dim myself - something to do with Wellie's wonderfull risotto and loads of good French white

See Clare rub fat tummy full of risotto.
