  • Do Summat Different Today

I've mentioned that Mr TS is doing this programme with an aim to losing some weight.
The general idea is that by changing your habits, you will change your mindset & therefore your eating & exercise habits.

He's not lost any weight, but he is finding the tasks interesting, not too challenging & quite good fun. It's whiling away these dull autumn days.

I thought some of you might like to join in on a just-for-fun basis. If you do lose any weight, please let us know that it can be done!

    The tasks so far:

    - sit in a different chair all day (at work & home)
    - eat something you've never had before (his was camel)
    - take a different route to work (bus instead of car?)
    - learn a new word & use it all day (his was procrastination)
    - no TV for 24 hours (he read a book, played Scrabble & had a very long bath)
    - get up an hour earlier than usual (but no TV)
    - contact an old friend (we spent last night trying to trace a mate from 20 years back. We did it! God bless Google)
    - learn something new about your home town

Two Sheds, I think this is a great idea.
I did a few things different this week but not because of your post. Just changes in lifestyle.
My hubby had an operation on his hand and so I had to drive the car to places I would not normally even think about going to.
I have joined the pitch and putt club with my sister and today (yes today) we played in the hailstones, a definite first for me.
I drove my grandson home in the dark (which I would not normally do) and because of all these changes I am feeling a lot more confident.
Granted, they were forced upon me because hubby was out of action, but......just goes to show.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

I can't believe he didn't know that one!! Seriously though, I think it's a really good idea to try new things. I know I'm in a rut and need to get out of it.

Brilliant idea - and, would you believe it, I got stuck on the first one!!!

I usually sit in the same chair all the time at home.

          Am working on it.

Thanks, TS, for the great suggestions - they make sense, even apart from losing weight.

Hum,this could prove tricky as I work here and there is only one way up the stairs and into my office!

              Any suggestions?

Going upstairs backwards? No, on second thoughts, too dangerous - specially if you have just dropped a load of CDs on your foot!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Sounds interesting...but I am not really into all the 'loose weight' fads. I would like to do them just for fun though.
I am stuck on the first one....at home all our chairs match! At work I pretty much stand up all day
Second one, I made some sticky buns, never done it before, therefore never tried one before...does that count?
Third one: I could walk a longer way to work...??

Not got to the rest yet

Great idea TS. Down the line sometime you may lose weight but as we all get stuck in the same ole same ole syndrome. A change is as good as a cure they say.

Sounds good and suppose if you comfort eat when you're bored could easily work to help you lose weight ie too busy challenging yourself to do something else to snack. However as people have already said doing new and different things can be fun for itself and I like the fact that they're small and easily achieveable things so will get done rather than the climb a mountain things.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I don't know how it would help you lose weight but I do know that doing 'normal' jobs a different way makes you use different bits of your brain which helps against falling foul of dementia as you age.

i can't see how it would help you to lose weight, as all of those tasks seem very indolent- it would take monthes to work up to weight loss, and i am way too impatient! but i think it would be beneficial to anyone who is stuck in a rutt, or a bit depressed, as it is always good to it do things differently , see things in a different light, or from a different viewpoint. my latest way of doing things differently is picking up things, going up stairs , or any task, really, while on crutches- good for coordination, and learning the skill of patience, and tolerance for those who are less able bodied than i. you never realize how much effort goes into simple things until you are incapacitated somewhat.

I think it's fun and makes you think about your daily routine, and how easily you can make small changes
Plus I love hearing the creative ideas people are having for these challenges

It's supposed to make you think like a thin person. Apparently the research shows that fat people tend to do the same old thing, are very stuck in their ways etc, resistant to change, while thin people are not only more active, but also more flexible & into trying different approaches

By taking a fat person out of their comfort zone (the couch?) and doing different things, they may discover that they actually like walking to work, or ballroom dancing, or whatever
