  • Charging for green waste collection!!!!

Today I recieved a letter from my local council (Forest of Dean District Council), informing me that as of the beginning of April they will be charging £26 per annum for the collection.

I was flabbergasted when I first read the letter and definately won't be paying for a licence and wondered if any other council charge (without doing a web search).

Though having thought about this for an hour or so, it just means I'll be more encouraged to compost more or use my garden incinerator for bad weeds, etc.

Our council (Swale) have charged for 'brown bin' aka garden waste for ages, I can't remember how much as I've never subscribed.
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

Wow, you could be on to a winner there. Build yourself a couple of extra compost bins, canvass your neighbourhood and tell them you'll have it for £15 pa

Our council have always charged for green waste wheelie bins - £18.50 p.a. last year, or if you want to bag garden waste, you have to buy special purple bags from the council or they won't take it away. That's why I made room in my tiny garden for a dalek.

Edit: you can, of course, fill your car/trailer and take it to the council recycling site - no charge for that except petrol costs etc.

Cardiff provide 2 big green wheelie bins per property and collect them fortnightly (used to be weekly). Carmarthenshire make you buy starch bags (very flimsy) and will collect those if put out with the rubbish,
Compost bins and bonfires for me in Carms.

At present, North Somerset say you can have as many green waste bags as you like and they'll collect them on the designated days. But they often don't turn up in our village at all. Last Thursday was green bag day and we had four full ones, from mucking out the chickens, to go out and they didn't turn up. We left them until Monday as they are sometimes very late, but ended up taking them to the tip ourselves.

Talk has it that they are going to charge - I'm not paying unless the service gets a kick up the butt - and, on top of that, there is a numberplate recognition camera at the tip and they are going to charge you if you go more than 6 times a year. But, so far, this is just hearsay.....

I have to admit our local council Nottm City have got recycling about right. 3 wheelie bins, One brown for garden waste (collected fortnightly from April to Nov. One green for landfill and one grey top for all other recycled stuff, collected fortnightly all year.
I don't know about others but my landfill waste has reduced by about 75%.

Just a thought why don't you remind them they have to pay a tonnage penalty now for landfill and if everyone starts to throw their garden waste in that bin it would certainly increase those charges.
