  • Can you freeze buttermilk?

Bought as 1l carton, but only needed 500ml for my chicken recipe.
I decided to remind my self of my Ulster days and make some buttermilk scones, yum they're baking as I write.
I've got 250ml left, will it freeze?

Make some soda bread...then freeze it. That way you'll have a nice home made loaf when/if peeps drop in on ya unannounced.

Yup, I add a little bit of chopped up rosemary n sage to mine. Yummy with hot soup or stew. But it usually gets scoffed before we sit down for dinner. Also nice with lashings of real butter on.

Thats what I'm worried about! Have already scoffed a scone with lashings of butter on. Well, you've gotta do it while they're still warm haven't you?!

I made some when I visited a grape...she loved it and it keeps much longer than your everyday bread.

Out of interest, is it true that if you add lemon juice to milk you get buttermilk?

I think Buttermilk is what's left after making Butter from Cream. But I may be talking cack...

If I ever have a recipe that says buttermilk I do either that(add lemon juice) or a drop or two of white vinegar.

I think that's sour milk Thea, that you can make with either vinegar (as Andi& Di say above) or lemon juice and is a kind of substitute for butter milk.

If you warm full fat milk and add lemon juice and a pinch of salt to it, it will split and you'll have a kind of cheese. It's not bad nether.

Yes adding lemon juice to milk makes a buttermilk substitute as does watering down yogurt with milk. Haven't tried it though.
