  • The Boat Race - Come on Cambridge

    The Boat Race
    Saturday 03 April
    3:10pm - 5:10pm
    BBC1
    After comprehensively winning last year's race, Oxford are in no mood to let the momentum slip in their pursuit of Cambridge's overall 79-75 wins in the series that began in 1829. "Last year we had the strongest crew we've ever had but it didn't row as smooth as have this year," says Sjoerd Hamburger, the Dutchman at the helm of the Dark Blues multinational crew seeking Oxford's fifth win in six years. "The speeds we are hitting are as good as last year." Which will come as ominous news for his Light Blue counterpart American Deaglan McEachern and his equally cosmopolitan crew. The race begins at 4.30pm. Coverage is also on British Eurosport (4.30pm).

    Ah the Boat Race.
    I never went to university, have no affilliation with either city, have no interest in rowing as a sport and yet I love it as a spectacle.

    Dont care who wins, just love to see it.

    I also wonder if Sjoerd Hamburger the Dutchman is a relation of Bo Hamburger the Danish cyclist?

      OXFORD!!
      <g>
      The Boat race was a day of strong feelings in my parents' home. Dad supported Oxford, Mum supported Cambridge. I sided with Dad early on, and have stuck to it (but none of us ever took it too seriously).

                    [I first viewed the boat race more than 60 years ago. My dad was an avid supporter of anything sort of ceremonial from the boat race, Brighton run to changing of the guard. I supported Cambridge in those days and am still loyal.
                    What an exciting and thoroughly entertaining programme it was from start to finish. Particularly the finish!!![/I]

                      I love it too, I never mention If I want either team to win as if I give a team my backing its the kiss of death for them
                      I'm not a rower myself I think I would prefer riding the Severn Bore as if you get it right your pushed most of the way without the effort
