  • beetroot ... jam or chutney?

so today i pulled up a bucketload of beetroot,
I pickled the last lot sliced with onions and kohlrabi as they were all just the same size and perfect for ikea jars. (never pickled kohlrabi before so no idea if it will be any good)

Anyway been making special liqueurs and jams and chutneys for (sorry Christmas hamper gifts) so need to make something dead good with this lot of beetroot, as I want to just keep the next lot for eating.

So .... should I make beetroot jam or beetroot chutney ???

and should I make just beetroot jam/chutney or should I add anything,
(got about a million freshly windfallen apples that'll be going in freezer this week, with the plums, sloes, blackberries, green and red toms and onions i froze previously)

cheers sorry for mentioning the C word

Try jam first - then if you don't like it, add some cooked veg chunks and vinegar, and rebrand it as chutney = twice the chance of success :-)

just wondering what it'll be like with eating apples, maybe if I use the smaller ones that are a bit on. the sour side.

I've got red wine vinegar, Apple cider vinegar, malt and balsamic .... hmmmm decisions decisions.

glad I picked up a load of squeezy sachets of lazy ginger for 10p from b&m too

definitely think it's gonna be chutney then
having a lottie bonfire and BBQ so think I'll try out a jar of the different chutneys.... make sure the others all match up to this prize winner then x

yeah would be the sort of thing is normally do, but I think it would be hard to turn one into the other, jam even my low sugar ones would have much too much sugar in I think, like your thinking though

I love pickled beetroot, but have enough pickled I think, but the next lot I harvest will mostly be roasted or put in stews or just eaten on a butty x

Here's something like it, the vinegar and lemon juice go into the jelly.

Doesn't last long - as soon as the jar was open it was half full. Goes well with a mature cheddar.

My late mother from Kishinev used to do a mean borscht. Unfortunately never got recipe but there are loads on web. Bought some canned Polish from Lidl while back. It was awful!
