  • Barcelona recommendations plaese

I have a friend going to Barcelona and staying somewhere just off Las Ramblas in August and they asked me for recommendations. They have done park Guell and I said the miro foundation, Picasso museum and the market. Also discovered the Dali museum just outside Barcelona. They are not particularly arty but are happy to visit. Just wondering if any grapes have been to Barcelona and what they enjoyed and would recommend.

    Thanks as always

There is a beautiful Gaudi house just off Las Ramblas, Casa Geuil if I remember correctly and also the Maritime museum. Dont forget the Sagrada Familiar.

That house is definitely worth a visit - I'd go see that again if I go back.
They mustn't forget to drink out of the water fountain on Las Ramblas - it'll mean you are destined to come back again
I loved Sagrada Familia too. We went to Montserrat too, up in the mountain, by cable car. A real experience
I loved the flamenco show we went to one evening, I can really recommend that.

I went with my mum ?10 years ago. We also went to Montserrat and enjoyed the whole day.

We used the hop on off buses, two loops, two days. Don't think I have anything else to recommend, we saw the usual stuff, plenty wandering and exploring.

        DH recommends the Nou camp.

Sorry for seeing this so late.

For Gaudí fans, as well as the Palau Güell (off the Ramblas on Nou de la Rambla) and Sagrada Familia, there's La Pedrera (Casa Milà) and Casa Batlló on Passeig de Gràcia. Next to Casa Batlló is Casa Amatller, designed by the architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch.

Another Modernista building well worth visiting (especially if there's a Sunday morning concert) is the Palau de la Música (architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner). Absolutely gorgeous glass in the auditorium.

Rather than Boquería market, which has become so touristified it's not really a market anymore, I'd visit Sant Antoni market (newly re-opened following refurbishment) and Santa Caterina (refurbished to a design by the same architect (and his wife) who did the Scottish parliament.

Anyone visiting the Picasso Museum should wander down the street (Montcada) and into the Born area and the church of Santa Maria del Mar (Catalan Gothic).

For a lunch menu in special surroundings, there's Picasso's haunt Els Quatre Gats on Carrer de Montsió, also designed by Puig i Cadafalch.

Out of town, there's Montserrat for the monastery, and Tarragona has some impressive Roman ruins.

Sorry NG but it’s all your fault.
Since reading the thread all I can hear in my head is Freddie Mercury singing.............
Other than that no help whatsoever.

Well done for reminding me, Lumpy. The Magic Fountain at the foot of Montjuic (near Plaça Espanya) is a great spectacle: illuminated fountains dancing to music (including Freddie Mercury, naturally).
