  • Anyone else taken Statins?

    Hi
My OH had a cholestrol test a while back and the result was 8. He was put on statins and a virtually 'no fat' diet, which he has been on for 2 and a half months now. My concern is that he already has Parkinsons Disease so burns a lot of calories and since taking the statins and being on the diet he has lost even more weight. He also complains of vivid dreams and has no energy and has muscle aching. I am worried because he can't afford to lose more weight. Has anyone else had experience of these drugs? Can you come off them if you reach a 'normal' cholestrol level? Is there an alternative? Grateful for any advice.

I take Simvastatin with no side effects, but as your OH has Parkinsons and is having severe side effects, you should ask your GP about prescribing a different Statin, there are others. Cholesterol can be diet managed, but I would think something as high as 8 does need the drug and the right one should eventually lower and maintain a safe level. Hope you get this sorted soon SR. Best Wishes.

FF and PaulW thankyou for your reply, I think we will definitely go back to the docs.
PaulW that article was very interesting particularly as it suggests it can actually possibly contribute to Parkinsons, thankyou. I might do some further investigation into Plant Sterols, they might be a more healthy alternative.
