  • Anyone else excited about Cheltenham Festival next week?...

I'm so excitied now I can't sleep. So many questions and not long until we get the answers...

Will Binocular make it two consecutive winning five year olds in the Champion Hurdle?

Is Denman back to his best?

    Will I make any money?

Okay very little interest which I suppose is no surprise.

I'm going to put up a few tips and see if that generates much interest.

    Tuesday
    1.35 Kempes
    2.05 Made In Taipan
    2.40 According to John
    3.20 Katchit

All decent odds. A 20p Lucky 15 will cost just £3.00 if you are interested and just 1 of these winning will net you a profit.

    Will update Wednesday a.m...

If I back a runner, it either stops, runs backwards or falls at a fence!

Have the opposite problem when I show mine a stubble field though - brake-failure lol!

        Good luck with your flutter.

My last BIG birfday pressie to Brian was an outing to the Cheltenham Festival. Not the cheapest option but not the most expensive. When the day arrived I was so ill with bronchitis I should have called off. He was SO excited and didn't want to go with anyone else.

He arranged that we arrived by train. We had champagne on the journey. He had a hip flask (large) of whisky mac in his pocket. I was so so sodding ill. We won quite a lot of money, which made our day.

To this day I'm so glad I went through with it even if I spread my germs around.

It was our last really great time together before he died. I am so glad I gave him such a super day out and didn't wimp out 'cos I was ill.

I work at Denman and will have a bet.

Its a 4 day meeting and as they saying goes it is a marathon not a sprint...

Anyway Made in Taipan was unlucky and only just missed out on getting placed (4th) which was pretty good considering "horse not a prayer".

Will update later on despite negativity...

Hope you have better luck today NWP! My OH is very keen on racing - he always used to have the Festival days off so he could watch it at leaisure at home. These days we don't have telly, so he listens on the 'puter, or nips into a handy bookies. He only puts bets on certain races though, he's a very controlled backer, only does it if he really feels it's in with a chance. Spends hours studying form over course, distance etc, etc -he does quite well with it, although he only backs using 'free' bet money, and only to £5 max. (As I said, far from being a real gambler).

He used to be in the Elite Racing Club, so had a very small share in lots of horses - we've had some cracking days out to stables, gallops and of course the races - often with owners badges. He went to the Festival as an owner one year, and was made up when he got chatting to John Francombe in the members! Martin Pipe told one of our small sons to put Mum & Dads savings on one of his horses at Devon and Exeter once (not sure that was very responsible!) - it did go on to win mind !

We live miles away from racecourses these days, so haven't been for years - when we lived in Somerset it was a different story, plenty of cracking courses handy, we were members at Wincanton.

I'll stop rambling now! Good luck with the rest of the Festival, but thought I'd let you know that not all the Grapes were alien to horse racing
Life is brief and very fragile, do that which makes you happy.

Thanks for your comments. Maybe Ffos Las will give you more opportunities to go racing in the future. Once it opens of course.

I know some people who have been part of the Elite Racing Club and they say how much fun they had on various events etc. It is quite expensive to keep up the membership but would recommend a 1 year membership for the experience.

Sounds like your OH enjoys the racing for the horses not for the money which is good. Betting lots of money takes all the fun out of it.

BTW I should point out that these are decent priced horses and not favourites. Any old fool can tip up a fav but then it may be embarrassing when it falls at the 2nd fence...

                        Wednesday
                        2.05 Knockara Beau
                        2.40 Casey Jones
                        4.00 The Polomouche
                        4.40 Higgy's Boy

Please feel free to criticise my selections and then put up your own only for them to do equally as bad.

I'm starting to think that posting my selections here is a jinx as I had a good day yesterday but the ones I didn't fancy so much came up.

                          Thursday
                          1.30 Naiad de Misselot (9/1)
                          2.05 Raslan (66/1)

                          4.40 Le Duc (25/1)

Henry won't gallop in a stubble field. I think he doesn't like the scratchiness, soft bugger! Large grassy stretches produce throttle stuck on syndrome, though.

I find horse racing sooooooooooooo boring, sorry! I mean I like cars, too, but to watch them go round and round sends me to sleep.

Truck racing? Now yer talkin! Why don't they do that over here?!?
