  • Any nurseys in the house?

Or in the hospital perhaps that should be?
I heard yesterday of a custom, that a newly qualified nurse has her nurses belt bought for her by her mum.
Can any nurses tell me if thats actually the case please?

Hi Bob, I'm not but OH is so I have picked her brains. Yes it was something of a tradition (but the answer was Yes and No). Tips would be:

    1. It has to be silver, REAL silver.
    2. It should preferably be antique
    3. If new perhaps initials could be engraved on it.

After all that UK Infection Control and dress codes most probably preclude the nurse from actually wearing it!!

    Hope this helps.

No problem Bob, that iswhat we are all here for after all.

Another point (just thought of) the material the belt is made of was traditionally petersham (not sure I have spelt it right) and the colour for a newly qualified nurse was Royal Blue (but again these days the uniform colours have varied), a Sister / Ward Manager would be Navy Blue.

I bought my own buckle when I qualified (Mum didn't think about it and it never crossed my mind either ) I couldn't find it when my own daughter qualified, so I bought an antique one (off Ebay) for her. I've since found mine so she's now got 2
