I do have a small collection of old coins so I might recognise some of them.

DC you need a specialist site here. My late father had a big coin collection - after he died, my mother was riddling out the fire and found a golden guinea in the clinker - she had burned envelopes with a coin in!

Tried to do a quick google on Stanley Gibbons - I know they're renowned for stamps etc, but I thought they also did coins - not so I'm afraid.

Try a local library or spend a little longer than I have available online to search.

An auction house may be able to give a free valuation and advise of best avenue to sell if that is your intention long-term. And indeed for insurance purposes and security.

However if the value is negligible - I'd have thought it would form the centre piece of family memorobilia - and something to pass down to the next generation/s.

Age of the coin doesn't necessarily mean value - a 1930(1933? - yr may be a bit out) penny with a small 'h' in the year box means its a Heaton Mint coin - and you're talking many thousands - so do look CAREFULLY! Evidently Roman coins used in Britain are of more interest than value. There was also a VERY recent error on the 20p coin where some slipped through without the year impressed - again quite valuable already.

What I loved most about my stamp and coin collections when I had them was the history and geography that both taught me and the changing face of he world.

You're vey lucky to be the chosen recipient of this lovey collection. Enjoy it.

Ha- nope- you can pick up Roman coins for less than a fiver.

There will be a lot of coin dealers in your area.

Have a play on Google...I found this...

There are bound to be hidden away shops - esp in towns with Antique shops.
Nip along and take them with you.

There are very few coins of that age with much value financially...but it's worth finding out.

There are books worth thumbing through in Waterstones etc...
Maybe your library too.

I gained a moneybox full of sixpences when my uncle died, along with some other bits and bobs like all the commemorative Royal coins (Queen's Jubilee, Charles' wedding etc) a few shillings, a threepenny bit; none of them seem to be worth anything, except for scrap value

(Have a feeling that my cousins took the ones worth anything, leaving the rest with the rest of the junk they couldn't be @rsed to do anything with...) I'm happy to have them though, my kids know a bit about 'old' money now

My uncle left me his coin collection when I was a teenager & I remember my mum saying I should look through them & have them valued as she thought he had a gold sovereign & some really old coins in there. My uncle always used to smile though when mum told him he should sell them as he was skint & he'd wink at me. I got a book out of the library & checked some of them out & found the one she thought was a sovereign was actually an advertising gimmick & most of the others were just of interest & no monetary value & uncle had spent hours polishing them with Brasso so removing any patina! I've still got them all & I can picture him giggling at my mum!

Lol i have loads C/D commenrative and jubilee and chuchills and your bang on Sarz the c/d are worth about a tenner on fleabay each but the rest..as you say scrap
