Carly, a dog could get this anywhere, on the streets or in the woods. It's a dreadful disease, but it would be a shame if it stopped you and your dog enjoying life.

I guess you've read all about it, so I won't post any links that will upset or scare you more. The thing to do is talk to an expert, your vet, not just read all the scaremongering stories in the press, which likes to sensationalise things for maximum effect. You might have to pay for a vet consultation, but they will be able to tell you precisely what to look out for. You sound like a responsible dog owner, so if you saw the symptoms in your dog, I'm sure you'd be down to the vet in a trice, minimising any possible consequences.

One thing you could do is ask your vet to give a talk about it for their clients. That would be a positive contribution and I'm sure the vet would be pleased to do it. After all, it's good for dogs and it's good for their business.
