    Using a old council bin as a compost bin or wormery?

    We have 2 big darlic compost bins that are heaving! I cant afford a new compost bin at this very minute even though they are on buy on get one half price (see link below) and I hate throwing stuff in the green bin that can be composted. So, I was wondering if I drill some holes in the brown bin (at the bottom) and shove some worms in there will this work?

    It would but better if you could have something under the bin to catch the liquid(good to fertilize plants)

      If you're trying to make a wormery, you are supposed to use Red Wriggler worms to do it. I don't think normal earth worms survive. Can't remember where I've read this, to be honest.

        Yeah I just remembered about that, I bought some last year from a fishing shop for my otger compost bin. I wonder if i could nick aome from there.... I cant remember if I emptied it into the ground or not.

          When the suns up go and find out! I would love to have a wormery. What an exciting idea. I will try to make it happen sometime soon.

            I know this is an old thread but I thought some people may find this useful.

            I have used one of those old council recycling boxes as in this link: How to make your own wormery

            The only changes I made were that I used a solid wooden board for a lid and I layed some cardboard underneath the whole thing to soak up any liquid that might leak out (I'll teventually compost and replace the cardboard). I put a kilo of worms in a couple of months ago. Initially many tried to escape/explore so I left the lid off and the light on overnight to dissuade them from climbing up the sides. They are now comfortable and thriving on mostly kitchen scraps and the occasional crushed eggshells, chopped nettles etc. The box is situated in a frost free shed.
