  • Two leaking water butts

I have 2 water butts and both of the taps have started to leak. It's not the actual tap but between the butt and tap if that makes sense.

I have tried silicone that you use in bathrooms but that hasn't worked.

Is it a case of just a new tap?

Try Fernox LSX Jointing Compound. PTFE tape wrapped around thread might do.

Hot glue gun works wonders but you need them to be dry before you try a repair.

I'm not certain but I have a feeling there's a rubber washer between the tap and the barrel? Tightening the plastic nut in behind usually sorts out any leaks.

You tend to get 2 types of connection. The Screw-in type and the nut on the back type. Both use the same tap, rubber washer etc. - same setup for beer kegs.

If it is the nut on back type - re Aberdeenplotter, 1st try just tightening it slightly. Not too much or you will distort the washer and it will leak more.

If that does not work, disassemble / remove the tap and clean tap, washer and backing nut (if present). Vaseline the flange and thread of the tap and the rubber washer.

Screw back in - Hand tight. Don't over tighten.
If Nut on inside, again tighten to hand tight and then qtr to half turn to seal.

You can also get tank connector washers at the likes of screwfix and B&Q. or visit a Garden Centre or beer / homebrew shop for the rubber type.

          All best
