Our neighbours have a very old, wire fence which they do not want to replace. For privacy and aesthetics we would like to create some growing screening. We are considering using jasmine trained to trellis. Would it be easy to keep under control with pruning? And would it be a good idea to keep them in pots in the ground to help stop them growing to huge? Or does anyone have any other ideas?

What sort of area are you talking about?...height? Facing which direction?
Any piccies would be helpful.
If you are keen on jasmine, do be aware there are both winter and summer flowering varieties.
If the sun is on their side of the fence, so too will your flowers!
I grew honeysuckle ( summer and winter flowering) and summer flowering jasmine along a length of fencing where we used to live.

I am not totally married to the idea of jasmine but thought we could use an evergreen jasmine for year round coverage. The wire fence is only about 3ft and I want the trellis to be 5 ft.
The garden is south facing so gets plenty of sun. Honeysuckle would be lovely too, perhaps I could use both?Comment

Both would be nice. Also perhaps clematis?I don't know if you want a hedge there but we have a mix of hawthorn and beech for year-round screening in our garden, with jasmine, clematis and honeysuckle mixed inComment

I've got a winter flowering jasmine,this is how it looks after flowering & it stays with full leaf coverage till around November/December. Its a great screen here & easy to prune too.

Thanks everyone! I think a combination would be lovely. I decided against a full hedge because I don't want it to narrow the garden too much, its rather long and narrow as it is. Will just have to make sure the trellis is sufficiently anchored. I am also going to espalier a couple of fruit trees, are their other trees or shrubs that are good for training that might make an attractive alternative to fencing?Comment
