  • Always wanted a chainsaw...............

............no, not to masacre you people with.

Just bought a new petrol Stihl chainsaw and looking forward to doing a bit of damage with it!

I've looked at cheaper versions but after doing a bit of probing and research the Stihl version is the one I went for. Its just to do a bit of log chopping for woodburner and has to be easier than using a bow saw.

I'm a bit woorried about using it on any other timber in case I catch a nail or screw and do damage to it and me.

It's a bit of a boys toy, but so was the tractor I just sold which gave me some spare cash to purchase it with!.

Could quite fancy a go at the chainsaw carving lark as well, make myself a few totem poles for the allotment!

    Just saying!

I got my fingers caught in a hedge trimmer, cut the tip of a finger off with a guilotene and lost a nail when my mum skated over my hand on an ice rink and cut my finger to the bone....when ever I think about getting a chainsaw I remember these things and don't get yourself some proper chainsaw PPE. Pants, gloves and helmet minimum. I work for Parker merchanting who sell them online but there are many other places too.

At my last place I bought a £50 electric chainsaw and chopped down a 35 ft high leylandi that had divided into 3 trunks at about 6 ft.
I later read quite a lot of serious advice that stated that if a tree had divided into multiple trunks you should REALLY get a tree surgeon in to do the job.
I concur wholeheartedly after the things I went through to get that bugger down.
Having said that, the chainsaw still sits at the back of my shed, tempting me with its sultry air of danger. I might get it out and give it a damn good oiling this weekend...

My Dad and Brother got my oldest Daughter a toy Stihl chainsaw for Christmas and both my girls love it So glad I only have one family member that has old fashioned beliefs on what toys girls should have. Although my Dad did tell me off when I asked did they not have a pink chainsaw

Edit: My Dad and Brother have quite a few Stihl bits and they do use gloves, steelies and the helmet with faceshield and ear defenders. Have fun with your new toy and enjoy it sensibly .

I've got all the necesary PPE including, helmet/shield and a leather blacksmiths apron!

I have a healthy respect for cutting tools and quite a few scars, though no body parts misssing, from using saws and angle grinders in the past!

Don't really need it, but its a belated Crimbo prezzie to mesell!
