  • The Weekly Showcase 2020

Since we all like photos, shall we have a Weekly Showcase of our Veg, Fruit and Flowers?

You could pretend you're entering a show and arrange them artfully or just bung them in a bucket. It doesn't matter - no prizes sorry!! Its just for fun and to brighten up the week.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Its Roots week on the VC Calendar and, to mark the occasion, I pulled a bucket of carrots that had been lurking in the garden for months.

That's a nice looking garden, VP. Do you find the wood mulch harbours slugs? I like the One Yard Revolution vlogs on You Tube, and he thinks that his wood mulch has actually cut slug numbers as it also encourages things that eat slugs. However, he's in Chicago so I'm not sure if the same would apply in slug-ridden Britain!

Thanks Self-Contained. the bark chippings are spread over weed membrane as I was too lazy to clear all the weeds etc. before setting up my beds. And Those Brambles were determined. Pretty easy to clear the weeds growing on top too. In regards to slugs... I did better last year as I used Nematodes just on the beds for 5 applications starting mid April. I'll often find eggs under the membrane if I pull it back.

That said, I have a pond with Newts, keep the end of the garden wild(ish) have a few wood piles and feed the birds. Last spring I had a Hedgehog and a couple of babies. So there are plenty of animals rummaging though. Which is why I don't like to use chemicals/ pellets.

The big boring patch closer to the house is a maze of pots and containers once everything really gets going.
