Had a little think about next years crop for the show. Obviously i'd grow a variety such as Enorma or Liberty but was pondering this and whether it would work.....

Create a tunnel......6 foot high by about 8 or 10 foot wide by about 6 or 8 foot long using canes.

Grow the plants up the 6 foot canes but remove all flowers. Try to keep the plants growing up an individual cane and keep de-budding

When the plants reach the top, train them along the top poles but let them flower and start feeding.

Hopefully the beans will grow straight down from the top of the tunnel, creating long, straight beans.

    What do you think ?

    Andy!
My only concern with this method your thinking on! (But I'm getting your drift!)
Would be the amount of beans you would actually get to harvest with you de-budding the earlier flowers!

That said, if your growing to show! Maybe your not gunna need a numerous amount!

I'd say "Give It a bash!"

Wouldn't the beans all be in shadow?

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

It's much like a munty frame, even on one of those they don't always grow straight.

            Thelma!
Was also thinking the same! One can only but try! But nature is a funny old thing!

They'll grow exactly as they wanna do!

But if they're hanging down from the tunnel then I meant that the bean foliage (which gets very thick) would shade the actual beans underneath.

PS - why the rolly eyes? I wasn't being facetious

I can see you point Alison,I think it will depend whether Andy grows from one side (like a munty frame) or from both sides, single sided will be OK but from both sides to the middle will deffo make a very dark tunnel.

Never thought of one sided ( I like to see both sides of an argument ), could see that working better.

Sorry! Misuse of a smilie! Not wanting to offend! Use the "Rolly eyes smilie as a "I was just thinking" smilie! Should have made my first post clearer, was in the same mindset as BB with regards to a "Munty Frame" one sided!

No malice intended! Hope that clears it up!

Oh go on then, will let you off, just this once - although to be fair was more confused (it doesn't take much!) than annoyed
