  • What's munching my carrots?

I pulled up one of my chantennays, only to find some little critter was munching away at it. Is it carrot root fly? This is my first particualrly successful carrot crop and I was hoping to use them for christmas dinner, but if they're all like this I may have to forget that idea. In one of the photos you can just make out a little white grub looking thing in the hole.

    Looks like Carrot Fly Dilettante.

For some reason I've been thinking I haven't been getting carrot fly. I thought it occurred nearer the top of the carrot. Well bugger me, my carrots are probably done for. I'll lift them and see what I can save. I was so proud of them as well. Ta

See what they are like when peeled, the damage may be just on the surface.

Could just be slug damage from those little black ones.

It does look like slug damage although both may be present. If you break a carrot horizontally if there are brown tunnels within the carrot it is definitely the fly that has done the damage. Try pealing a few. you'll soon find out if they are worth salvaging

I also think it looks more like slug damage than carrot fly.

I'd say slug damage on the first photo, second one is too blurry to say.
