I think I remember germinating peanuts in cotton wool at school in science, one in the dark/warmth & one without warmth, that's all I remember & that warmth was best. But I also remember burning a peanut on a Bunsen burner & no-one used to suffer nut allergy? (My peanut memoir!)

Good idea Mallly. But I don't think they'll have them in their shells. Didn't someone earlier in this thread say that was important? Maybe that's not so. I can't remember if the ones I planted long ago were freshly from shells. I feel a bit of experimentation coming on.Originally posted by Bigmallly View PostCheck out some pet shops Zelenina. They can be planted in or out of their shells but the shells need to be split if left in.sigpicGorillas are very intelligent, but they don't have to be as delicate as chimps -- they can just smash open the termite nest,

Ah yes. This is what Nicos said in post #14. She read that they should be freshly shelled. But not everything we read about growing stuff is true, so I guess someone needs to do a test on some not-freshly-shelled ones. It will be easier for more people to join the challenge if that isn't a necessity.Originally posted by Nicos View PostThe link I put up says don't use the ones already out of their shells as they dry out...freshly open them yourself- so if they have been sprayed, I doubt anything will have got inside?

I need to get on top of this, my visit to Tesco to purchase some monkey nuts has thus far been unsuccessful. They had loads of roasted monkey nuts, which are of course of no use for this, but no raw ones.
I'll have to try Asda, Sainsburys or the local market, unfortunately they aren't as convenient for me.

Well, I've belatedly read through this thread and decided I may devote a quarter of my poly tunnel to some peanut cultivation.
From what I've read they would be suited to a well drained area, i.e.. raised bed (Yet to be made).
I am working new Years Day and the following day so it will be 3rd January before I get mine sown.
I'll toddle off now and find some growable peanuts.

Tesco Monkey Nuts 400G - Groceries - Tesco Groceries
I wonder whether the enterprising soles selling these on ebay just split up a packet and sell them for about 4.00 for 10 seeds!

Yeah I found those too on the tesco website which left me hopeful when I went to the shop only to find they had every other type of monkey nut they sell but the raw ones
I'm going to Sainsburys this afternoon so I'll try there and if not then I'll give the pet shop a go as suggested.
