Regarding keeping a clean and tidy plot so as not to provide slugs with hiding places makes me wonder about all the wood chippings and shredded bark used on paths and as mulch. Surely this is defeating the object?

I know what you mean Bill I've got the same thoughts about raised beds all those boards must make good hiding places, so I've got un-raised ones mines more like mounds.
