Tuesday jobs
Rearrange plants under lights to accommodate germinating beetroot - done
Check chitting seeds and pot up any showing roots - done
Sow spinach in hotbed - done plus some lettuce
Harvest lettuce, salad leaves, pea shoots, parsnip, carrots - done
Also planted 2 buckets of Lady C potatoes under a cloche that now gets some sun as the chits were getting too long. I am prepared to lose these as I have enough remaining seed potatoes for my usual crop.

Yesterday I put some dwarf french beans to chit (old seed so they may not germinate) and harvested PSB.
Trying to motivate myself to do some general tidying up today.

Wednesday jobs
Check allotment and weed where not flooded - done, and a small handful of weeds
Sow spinach for hotbed - done
Phone garden centre and get onion sets if available - not in yet
Harvest carrots - done
Also put up the cover over the hotbed, which involved removing the existing frame and replacing it with hoops.
Not sure I will be able to do any gardening today. I am waiting to hear if I have a meeting, and even if not, it is currently -2 outside, so everywhere is likely to be frozen solid again.

Monday jobs
Sow microgreens - done
Put 2 Shirley tomato seeds to chit (to grow indoors) - done
Weeding if possible - done a little
Also removed the rest of the beetroot as it was starting to rot - most of it was too small to do much with anyway. The allotment is flooded again after all the rain.
Unlikely to have any gardening time today and the forecast isn't great anyway.

Just checked round today - replaced a few nets that had been blown about and put the downpipe back on the greenhouse gutter. Allotment still frozen solid in most places, so gardening is very limited for now. Harvested a beetroot.

Wednesday jobs
Batten down the hatches - severe gales forecast on Friday - done
Harvest salad leaves, microgreens, carrot, leek - done
Meetings this morning and it looks like this afternoon is going to be wet, so gardening unlikely.
I have no intention of attempting to do anything in the garden except check for damage tomorrow (storm Eowyn)Last edited by Penellype; 23-01-2025, 10:03 AM.

I did manage to top up the new hotbed yesterday after breaking through a half inch thick frozen layer on top of the old hotbed. I'd hoped to harvest a parsnip as well, but the compost there had not been covered with black plastic and I couldn't break through the frozen layer. Harvested a carrot from the garage instead.

Monday jobs
Check allotment - done
Weeding - no
Clear leaves - no
Top up hotbed if possible - no, still frozen solid
Harvest carrots, leeks - no
Slightly warmer yesterday but it decided to rain on and off and that was enough to put me off doing much, although I put a net back over the parsnip bed as there were signs that the cat had been scratching in it.
The weather and my enthusiasm are no better today so I am giving it a break for now. There isn't much I can do until the deep frost melts anyway.

Busy most of Saturday and with a maximum temperature yesterday of just 0.6C it was simply too cold to do anything outside.

Friday jobs
Finish hotbed - done most*
Harvest lettuce, salad leaves, microgreens, carrots - done except carrots
* I have filled the bed with horse manure but not topped it up with compost from last year's bed, for the simple reason that it is still frozen solid.
Also planted 3 seed potatoes that were absolutely desperate in a bucket in the garage.

Check state of garden and greenhouse. Unlikely to be defrosted as it is colder there than here.
