  • Seed Saving

So folks. It's that time of year when those of us that avidly save our seeds will be frantically looking for containers to put tomato seeds in to ferment for 3 days.

Just a little hint when saving from toms when you still want to use the actual tomato.

Cut a cross in the stem end, nice and deep, with a sharp knife. Get your little jar ready and squeeze the seeds out - a knife is useful to scrape any hangers on into your jar. Then, just continue to use the tomato. It is so much easier than cutting the tomato up and scraping the seeds out.

And for those that have never done it before, or who want to see how easy it can be - here's a little linkie to a free resource that I helped write, and took photos for.

Sorry to lower the tone, but youngest daughter is pregnant and the little plastic jars that she gets given for weewee samples are ideal.

Just bumping as I'm packing up lots of bags of seed saved already - into bundles of 15 for circles and the excess will go into the general swap pile.

I have fermented all my tomato seeds, but not the chilli seeds. Does anyone know if this is needed?

no you dont need to ferment chilli seeds, just allow them to dry when removed and then pack into containers (bags etc) I usually dry mine on kitchen roll - hope that helps
