  • The Herb Garden - month by month

The thread title is also the title of a book that has lurked on my book shelf for years. I've flicked through it but never sat down and read it properly. However, its going to be my next little challenge and I hope some of you will join me.

I'm going to list the "Plants of the Month" and try to grow as many as possible (or at least one).

This month, March, the herbs to be grown from seed are:-

    Anise Hyssop - Agastache foeniculum
    Borage
    Nasturtium
    Sorrel
    Vervain - verbena officinalis
    Summer Savory
    Sunflower
    Sweet Cicely - Myrrhis odorata
    Sweet Violet

    Grown from cuttings :-
    Pennyroyal - Mentha pulegium
    Spearmint - Mentha spicata

I should be able to grow at least 5 of these herbs. How about you??

I have to admit my herb garden is usually good intentions and not a lot else. Could do with a herby kick up the bum.

    Anise Hyssop - sown
    Sweet Cicely - sown

will do some nasturtium and sunflowers next week.

Borage already growing self-seeded on the allotment, does that count

Too early for sowing sunflowers, with this weather forecast to last til April, so I'll sow mine later.

Welcome on board everyone! Like NG, I have good herb intentions but fail miserably.

For completeness these are January & February herbs which can be sown now

              January

              Sow:-
              Chives
              Rosemary
              Winter savory

              Take cuttings in spring
              Bay & Rosemary & Winter savory -

Buy or take soft stem cuttings in summer - French tarragon

              February

              Sow (indoors or GH)
              Basil
              Canary balm - Cedronella canariensis
              Cowslip
              Eucalyptus
              Evening primrose
              French marigold
              Parsley
              Perilla
              Safflower
              Sage
              Thyme
              Wild strawberry
              Woad

              Sow outdoors or in pots
              Chervil
              German chamomile

              Take cuttings
              Chicory
              Sea holly

              Divide
              Chives
              Costmary
              Ginger
              Sorrel

PS I've found another bigger, better list in this book of what to do when. I'll add to the March list when I've had breakfast

What ever book is this from?

Chives - to go in the the next week or so
                Rosemary - sown
Basil - sown (sweet, greek, neopolitan and greek)
French marigold - to go in the the next week or so
Parsley - to go in the the next week or so
Safflower - to go in the the next week or so
Sage - sown and to go in the the next week or so
Thyme - to go in the the next week or so

That doesn't look as impressive as the book list

Edit: Lettuce leaf basil still to sow.

Oh, lots of rosemary and thyme that grows wild, plus sage in a pot.

My assortment's not strictly by the book, but the seed packets said I could sow indoors, I swear...

Parsley - immediately grew to four inches and started flopping about
Dark opal basil - pleasing tiny purple sprouts
Coriander - sprouting a few days after sowing
                      Oregano - just tiny sprouts
Nasturtium - monster seedlings from a sowing a month ago. I'll be out of town for two weeks and I expect my dining table will be completely covered when I return
Chives - first sowing didn't germinate, trying again
Rosemary - bought a small plant from the store last fall and kept it indoors. I believe it is now quite dead.
Sunflowers - waiting til April per the all-knowing seed packet

I mostly grow the herbs indoors. I'm hoping to put some in on the allotment, but not sure they'll approve of the clay soil

I like the look of that book VC.
I'm very tempted by that, specially for 1p.
I really would like to do better with & get more out of my herbs

I've never had any luck with summer or winter savory and I keep killing my lemon thyme

SP I have "lots" of herb books. This one appeals to me because of its "what to do this month" advice which is clearer than some of the other books which tell you how to grow a herb and what to use it for but don't give you a prompt of when to do it.
Its not all pretty pictures, more text and drawings.
