  • Herbs to use in teas/infusions

OK, so I'm working on a small (secret) project...

Does anyone have any info on what herbs can be used for teas/infusions etc, and what the teas would be used for??

I've got mint, but I'm not sure if chamomile is a herb or not... and I'm stuck for others!

    Any ideas?

    Nettle; Sage; Fennel; Lemon Balm

I think Chamomile is a herb...

Chamomile is definitely a herb - use an infusion as a tonic and as a relaxing, mildly sedative tea (or add it to your bath for sunburn!)
Tarragon infusion for digestion and as a general tonic
        Calendula for digestion
Coriander seed infusion for digestion and and as a mild sedative
Fennel Seed tea (in moderation) was known as the lady's friend in medieval times, thought to act as an appetite supressant.
Lavender flower infusion to soothe headaches and to calm the nerves.
Mint tea is good for digestion and for colds.
Lemon Balm tea for catarrh, colds and headaches (and because it's really nice)
Bergamot tea for nausea, flatulence, menstrual pain and insomnia
Marjoram, infuse the flower tops for colds and headaches.
Oregano tea for coughs, headaches and irritability
Thyme infuse as a tea for digestion and for hangovers! Sweeten with honey for coughs, colds and sore throats.
Vervain infusion for digestion and nervous exhaustion

and of course Borage flowers to float in your Knight's stirrup-cup to give them courage as they depart for the Crusades - or just put them in your Pimms!

Bet you wish you hadn't asked!!

The only one I use (which has already been mentioned) is Bergamot leaves added to a tea bag in a cup of boiling water, give my own version of Earl Grey tea!
Toyed with the idea of making a cordial with it similar to elderflower but with an orange tang?

I don't think anyone's mentioned lemon verbena yet. It makes a lovely lemon-scented tea. I had some this morning.

and the 'Victorian Pharmacy' programme a week or so ago said cleavers were good as an infusion for clearing the chest (if I remember correctly) certainly something in a cough treatment with common plantain and essence of horehound

Rasberry leaves too (help kick start labour too, if you're carrying a bump ;p) - also said to strengthen up internal muscles such as your core and womb muscles.

Echinacea too - it's said to "stop a cold in its tracks".

Alys Fowler's the edible garden book has a load of herbs listed for infusions.

I use raspberry leaves in tea, very good for *that* time of month
I also use peppermint tea when I have indigestion and camomile if my tummy's a bit iffy.

I have a feeling you should steer clear of rasp leaves when pregnant (last of my worries!)
In fact I would check on ANYTHING if I were, or attempting to be, in that blessed state.
