  • Dying sea holly

This plant purchased in June was thriving and a lovely silvery blue colour. Within just a few weeks it is now dying and it isn't even Winter

I don’t know the first thing about the plant marb, but RHS says…

”Likes….Most like very free-draining soil, some even thriving in poor, dry soil, in sun”
“ Dislikes…Very fertile, overly rich soils are unsuitable, as is a position in shade.”

I realise your garden is very shaded and you like to feed and well water plants. Could you perhaps have used the wrong compost and not given it the conditions it prefers?

This area is in full sun most of the day and I potted it on into the preferred soil type after looking it up but yet again for no reason it has failed. I really don't know why I bother as in the back of my mind I always know when I buy a new plant it will end up dying for absolutely no reason.

My mum has them in a bed beside trees and laurel , it's very dry and sandy and they are completely neglected.
I tried them here and didn't survive as I'm on wetter ground clay with peaty underneath.

This is Eryngium right? Yep mine are in probably my clayiest garden bed. The ground around them is shaded by cotoneaster so it doesn't get baking hot but still it's about 4 feet high

Perhaps it will pop up in spring of kept in the greenhouse over Winter.

Is there something wrong with your soil mate? Many people post problems but you post plant deaths more than most
