    It's buckwheat.
Not "wild buckwheat" (also know as black bindweed), which is a different species, but the actual crop buckwheat.

Maybe they grew it there in a previous year? Or maybe it's being grown elsewhere and just got mixed up with the seeds? Although buckwheat seeds are pretty different to flax seeds, both in size and shape.

Thanks Ameno. It must have been in with the flax seed because it follows the same row lines, but spaced about a foot apart across the whole field. The field was late sown, the flax is about 6" high, while the next field is pure flax and in flower. So perhaps it was the only seed available during the pandemic and the farmer had to take what he could get. I suspect it was sown after OSR crop failure. There is no OSR around here at all this year, the pollen beetle and wet winter destroyed the sowings.

Or maybe it's been sown as a cover crop mix.
